IhE. hOME CIRCLE. A Column Devoted to Tired ; Mothers as They Join the Home Circle at Evening Tide. . "YOU MIOHT HAVK THAID, Ol" - I wis hard at work in my study When I heard gentle tap, 4'Cme in!" and in came my Josie, Tearful from some mishap. And 1 knew that she was longing To be cuddled in my Up. , 4tl bmithed my finder orful, , And papa, it dock ache so!'r v 'Well, well, run away to mamma, For I can't help it, Jo." She raised her tear-wet lashes '1' pa, you might have thaid 'OS" The study-door closed softly Aud I was left alone With nothing to hinder my writing But the thought of a tender tone, . So loving and so reproachful ,1'would have touched' a heart of stone. And I sat and Uok army paper, But some how 1 couldn't writ And there broke on me in silence The dawn of a clearer light ; r 1 The touch of that aching finger Had give me my sight. Have a tender word, my brothers. For the little troubles and pains, II was not beneath our Master, It is far above our gains : It will hasten the-heavenly kingdom, Where only love remains. The thief who steals your peace of mind is meaner thao the one who steals your property. Teach your girl bow to cook, and if she does not thank you somebody's son will thank you for her. No one can so inspire a man to noble pur posses as a noble women and no one, so thoroughly degrade a man as a wife of un worthy tendencies. the object for which they meet. If it is to pass the hours in revelry and obscene talk, or to plot trouble to the state, then we say with an emphasis that it is wrongs Bat wh re the object is the improvement of th mind, the enlargement of the heart, the defense of the government,- then we say with just as much emphasis that they are a blessing. There is need that those who, plan for right over wrong should publish to the world their intentions. Secrecy of plot and execution are wrong only when the object and ends are nefarious. Every family is a secret society, every business fiim and every banking institution. - The men who have no capacity to keep a secret are un fit for positions of trust anywhere. Secret societies have done inculculable good. One society gave for the relief of their sick in loVv in mis country $1,490,274. Some of the sec ret societies have poured a very heaven of sunshine and benediction into the home of suffering. Some of them are founded in fidelity to good citizenship and the bible. Christ bas given us a rule by which we may judge, not only all individuals, but all secret societies. By their frnits ye shall know them." Bad societies make bad men. CncA societies make good men. A bad man will not stay in a good society and a good man' will not stay in a bad society. Test these societies by two or three rules. Their influ. ence home. That wife soon loses her influ ence over her husband who looks upon all evening absence as an assault on domesticity. That wife who becomes jealous of her hus band's attention to art, or literature, or relig ion, or charity is breaking her own sceptre of conjugal power. But let no man sacrifice home life to secret society life, as some do. Some men are as genial as angles at' the soci ety room and as ugly as sin at home. Miss Bessie Arledge has taken charge of school on the mountain. She will be missed in our village very much as she has been helping her father in Post Office the past summer and fall. - Mr. John Henry Gibbs will commence the public school here next Monday. " Mr. and Mrs. James Rucker and children speut several uat last week visiting Mr. Ruckers parents in South Caroliua. Rev. and Mrs. Wj H. Perry are very grate ful to Joe T., Edwards, of Poplar Grove, for making up money to buy Rev. ' Pejry a new suit of cloths for Conference and Mrs. Perry a nice dress. May God bless Mr. Edwards and all who contributed to this worthy object. t was a surprise to them but a very pleasant one. ; t.. , ; : 1 Rev. Whiteside preached a very interesting sermon Sunday. ' There, was no preaching Saturday. ; " Mrs. W. H.. Perry and Josie, wiil leave Thursday for a few days visit, to friends at Poplar Grove. ' JEALOUSLY. ? How fortunate it is that there is not a jeal ous person among our large family of readers. We do not know of one ; do you ? Such be- in" the case we can severely censure these jealous people that are to be found in most all communities. The first boy ever born was jealous. ' If you remember Cain took a rough ktkk and killed his brother Abel because he Wi. jealous. The sacrifice of Abel had been sccepted while Cain's was rejected. Jealousy is simply a grief we experience on account of the superiority of others, ' Their superiority in talent, wealth, beauty, virtue, or social or nolilical recognition. It is the shadow of other peojJc's success which clouds our lives. It is the thuuder of our neighbor's popularity which sours the milk of human kindness iu us. It is the father aud mother of half the woes and crimes ol the human race. It is Jealousy that keens all Europe disturbed. Nations jealous of Germany, of England, of Russia. Jcwuus of each oilier aud all jealous of America. Wuat a scene of jealousy we had in this country when Presideul Garfield was dying. Faithful physicians sacrificed their practice and health in fidelity to that death Led. Doctors Bliss' llainihun, and Agnew uent through anxieties and toils such as few ol us cu realize But they did not please the io Jt the medical world. The: doctors in caaigl: could do nothing right or pleasant to t.ie other doctors. Jealousy. Wheu you hear a uuin or woman abused, drive in on the defendant's tidc. Watch tor excellences in others rather than for defects, morning glories inste. i of nightshade.'4 If some one is more beautiful loan you, than h God that you have i..t many perils of vanity to contend with. J I some one has more wealth than you, thank G..U t.iat )ou have not so great stewardship to aus er for." If some one gets a higher cJce in chhrch or state you can thank God t'.iere are not so many to wish for the hasten ing of your obsetiuies. If you are assailed by jeaiuu') take it as "a compliment, for people are ;..ver Jsalous of a failure. Substitude for iea'uy. an elevating emulation. Seeing ot .ci ;ood, let us try and do better. The Captain is the picture of good health. C T. Scene, with his blushing young wife, has moved to Skyland. Hampton Owens has just gone down the road under the influence of corn. - He is not boozy but is just going to milL ' A crowd of boys, under the influence oi dew, undertook to beat No. 13 up the road Sunday. They succeeded in getting on top of the mail car but the conductor discovered them' and they were made to come down. They had twenty-five cents between them but lost it just before the train came in. Mr. Ellis Pearson found it next morning and it was in good coudition. -John Lane was down Sunday. While Jim Heatherly was telling a big joke the other day a yellow jacket Came along and taking Jim's mouth for his nest flew iu aud on discovering he had made a broad mistake stuck his stiuger in the roof of Jim's uiouih. Jim stopped telling his joke but the crowd en joyed a laugh just the same. Jetbeo Garren aud Oscar Johnson, accom panied by two young ladies, gave us a call Sunday.; The Sand house caught fire Saturday even ing, but thanks to our up-to-date fire depart ment, was soon extinguished.
