Mrs. Angie McFarland has been quite sick for several days, suffering from violent hemor rhages from the nostrils. Monroe Henderson is the Dem ocratic candidate for constable in this township to oppose John Hutcherson Jr. , the Repub lican nominee. A sweet potato weighing 3fts is a sample of what N. T. Mills can do irf that line. He present ed us with one and had a whole lot left for himself. There were no services at the Presbyterian chur c h Sunday, owing to the absence of the pas tor, Rev. T, C. Croker, who had gone to his old home for a visit. J. A. Garmony and family of Saluda, expect to move back here shortly and occupy the dwelling with Dr. and Mrs. Worth for the protection of the latter, both of whom are advan ced io years. Miss Emily Carnegie who has been assisting Mrs. Stevenson at Log Cabin Inn this summer will leave November 1st for North Augusta, S. C to enter a sani tarium for the purpose of becom ing a trained nurse. The friends of Virgil Cloud formerly of our town will be pleased to learn of his success in the hotel business in Petersburg, Va. He is partner in a lease of of one of Petersburg's fine hotels recently remodeled and improved. Cards are out announcing the marriage on Oct 15th, at Easley, S. C., of Geo. M. Pope of vNorth Cambridge, Mass., to Miss Zer mah Sitton of Easley. Miss Sit ton is well-known in this county, having attended school here and is a niece of John D. Carpenter. They will reside in Cambridge, Mass. The star route to Tryon will re sume the former schedule on Nov. 1st. The afternoon trip, will however, be made a little earlier in order to allow the carrier to reach here on the return trip before dark. This arrange ment will be satisfactory alike to and patrons the mail contractor, C. E. Page. . The Spainhbur-Justice debate -did not take place according to schedule. Mr. Justice did not put in an appearance at court last week owing to his wife's illness. Much interest was taken in the debate and many were disappointed at the failure of the Republican nominee for Solicitor to be on hand. . 'Lura West, Walker and John Arledge, Charlie Horton, Butler and Jess Mills, with their "old reliable" 'possum dog, Dave and the Polk County News, went 'possum hunting Tuesday night. They stayed out from 8 p. m. un til 4 a. m., and they didn't fail to catch the 'possums either, don't you forget it. Read law in the of fices of local attorneys, and re ceived his license last fall. Mr. Cloud is a self-made man. He was an artisan and studied law while not busy at his trade. He is a close student of public af fairs and an orator of no mean ability and will make an able leg islator. Has been a justice of the Peace and is now mayor of Columbus. v For Sheriff " - F. L. WEAVER : F. L. Weaver is a native of this county. He has .been prominent in politics in Polk for a number of years, was nominated for Sheriff by the Democrats in 1902 to oppose Sheriff Robertson but was defeated by a small majority. Mr. Weaver is a farmer and stock raiser and lives near Columbus. His hospitality is proverabial. Is popular with both parties, and has a large family connection. For Clerk of Court J. P. ARLEDGE J. P. Arledge, present incum bent, has served three terms as Clerk of the Superior Court of Polk County, and is a candidate for re-election. Mr. Arledge is a native of this county and was raised in the Green River section, was elected first by the Republicans. Became a Democrat and has served two terms. Has resided in Columbus since his second term. Has a large family connecting thrbught Polk and Rutherford counties. - For Register of Deeds . F. M. BURGESS F. M. Burgess is a native of Rutherford county, but moved to Columbus some years ago and married a daughter of W. H. Mc Farland, a former Register of Deeds. He was elected in 1902 and re-elected in 1904, bjsing the only Democrat on the ticket, who succeeded in getting in. Mr. Burgess has made a good record as Register and was nominated without opposition. For Treasurer J. R. FOSTER J. R. Foster is a Polk County man and a merchant in Mill Spring, and was a member of the Board of Education until recently, which he resigned upon being nominated for treasurer. He has never held any elective office, al tho he was a candidate for the nomination for treasurer two years ago. His business ability fits him for the office of treasurer and if elect ed will no doubt discharge the duties of this important office with entire credit. For Commissioners W. M. BARNETT P. D. WILLIAMS C. W; WILLIAMS Messrs. Barnett, Williams and Williams are all farmers, the for mer being a resident of the Coop er Gap section and the two latter resident of Greens Creek town ship. - None of them have ever held any public office in the coun ty but will make consciencious officiais and all stand well in their respective communities. - f-' ''- . For Coronor. . R. B. WILLIAMS. R. B. Williams is a yoUng man a son of J. W. Williams who lives near Lynn. He has never held any public office, but made a good run in the primary and will, a the Governor said, be needed oil the 7th of November to bury the Republicans so securely that they never will be resurrec'el in Polk county." He has never held any public office in the county but can no doubt "cut the earth to suit your taste' ' and therefore should be elected. LYNN LINERS. Crawford Spaks at Lynn W. T. Crawford," Democratic nominee for Congress from the 10th dis trict addressed the voters in the casino of the Mimosa Hotel Sat urday night. A large number of Lynn people were present, in cluding many young ladies, and several of the Tryon and Colum bus people. Mr. Crawford spoke along' the usual lines of his cam paign speeches and was fre quently applauded. Prof. Britt, the Republican nominee, - who had been invited to attend was unaEle to be present. ' W. T. Hammett of the Tryon Hosiery Co., has resigned his position and gone to Philadelphia to learn the hosiery mill business from a mechanical stand-point, and has been succeeded by Harb McDaniel of Rutherfordton. J. F. Cochran has purchased a part of the Bacon vineyard where he has been living several years. D. A. Goodman has nearing completion" a new house. When finished it will be very conveni ent and comfortable. H. G. Cannon bias about com pleted a new barn on his place. John Panther i s building a small cottage near his father's place. Miss Cora Belue of Campobel lo, is visiting her sister Miss Molly at Mrs. Norman's, who is assisting the latter at the Lynn school. Miss Monterey Thompson re turned last week from a two months visit to her sister in Greensboro. Messrs Poppe and Oppal spent Sunday at Skyuka and visited points of interest on the Moun tain. v CoL Jackson, a confederate veteran gave a lecture and ster eoptican picture exhibtion of con federate scenes at the school house Monday night. Bill Chellotite, a young Texan now of Lynn, succeeded in riding F.t L. Weaver's wild mule, in true cowboy style Tuesday in the presence of a number of interest ed spectators. C. JUD GAINES SHOT. Probably Fatal Accident to Popular Young Man of Tryon During Friendly Scuffle. Tryon, Oct 24. A very dis tressing accident happened here Saturday night by which the life of one of our best young men, Jud. Gaines, hangs in the bal ance. Mr. Gaines, who is a nephew of W. J. Gaines, went into the Ballenger Co's. store late Satur day night and became engaged in a friendly scuffle with A. L. Hill. During the struggle Mr. Gaines fell backward to the floor and the force of jthe fall dis charged a pistol which he carried in his hip pocket. The ball ran ged upwards towards the spine. He was taken to his home and given the best medical attention. The ball had not been located up to Wednesday morning but his chances are said to be fairly good as he has a strong constitution.
