' WHAT WILL YOU DO?
V Every week -during the fall
seasons we have to chronicle
the departure of boys and girls
Who are leaving the county to at
tend school and sometimes it is
whole families moving to other
counties or towns to secure bet
ter school advantages. Now
this is no reflection upon our
Superintendent and- Board o f
Education. With the "means at
their disposal they are doing
good work but they cannot do
much without the hearty co-op
eration and support of all the
people, which is hard to get in
this county because they will in
variably inject politics into every
movement o f a public nature,
which divides the people and
results in failure.
The county is small and thinly
sittled, it is true, and this is
largely responsible for the lack
of high school advantages but if
we wish men to move, into the
county with their families we
must be able to show them good
public school advantages. I n
other words we need an high
school such as the Baptist Hierh
School at Landrum, the Fruit-!
land Institute, Henderson county
or Rutherford college.
The county had the prospects
of such a school in the Central
Industrial Institute but the peo
ple of the county would not give
it the hearty cooperation and
support it deserved and it went
to pieces because, to speak plain
ly, the people of the several
county towns having little in
' common were rather jealous of
one another and each-wanted the
aa vantage.
1 iEvery man you approach will
tell you he is in favor of educat
ional advantages, but when the
time comes to act and make some
sacrifice to get it, there's nothing
doing and the sooner the people
realize this fact the better it will
be for the county. A private
institution o r denominatio n a 1
school will not succeed.
In order to get such a school
it will be necessary to have each
township contribute its share to
the maintenance of the school,
maKe tne tuition ana expenses
as low as possible and let each
'township offer , scholarships cov
ering all expenses per term to be
awarded byxompetitive examina
tion. In- this way a friendly
rivalry ii engendered and inter
est aroused and the scholarships
would be eagerly sought by am
bitious boys and girls to the last
ing benefit of all coucerned.
If something isn't done Polk
county; will dry up and blow
away. -.
I I THANKSGIVING.
Our Dear heavenly Father
We thank Thee for the manifold
blessings which thou hast show
ered upon us the past year. May
our Thanksgiving be heartfelt
and not from the lips merely as
a matter the form. May it take
the form of deeds as vell as words
hereby, proving by our actions
that we are truly grateful for thy
benefactions.
We thank Thee for? the bright
sunshine the blue sky and these
grand noble mountains, tb which
we may lift us our - eyes and
thank Thee for the privilege of
living in- this glorious climate,
while many must suffer the rigors
of an inhospitable clime where
frozen barriers or torrid winds
make life a burden.
We thank Thee for freedom of
conscience and the enjoyment of
the Divine right to worship and
praise Thee according to the dic
tates of our own consciences,
which is yet denied in many so
called Christian nations, and
may it please Thee to speed the
day when all men shall learn to
worship and praise "Thee as the
Divine Creator to. whom may be
ascribed all glory and honor for
ever. Amen.

TOOK FATAL DOSE.
Wm-. Jones of Lynn Took Morphine With
Suisidal Intent and Died.
Lynn, Nov. 23 .Wm. Jones of
this place took a fatal dose of
morphine yesterday, evidently
with suicidal intent, and died
this morning about eight o'clock.
He had threatened to kill him
self some time ago and took his
gun and went into the woods but
did not carry .his threat into
effect.
Yesterday he carried a quan
tity of morphine with him. when
he went to work and upon re
turning home in the evening his
wife asked him Jf he had taken
the morphine. He replied that
it was none of her business. She
insisted that it was and he ad
mitted haying taken it. She sent
for a physician but the effect of
the drug could not be counterac
ted and he died this morning. '
