Williams. ; ; B F. Hsmpton and family of Nacogdoches, Texas, arrived Monday to spend the holidays with relatives in Columbus. DeWitt Cannon of Lynn, who is attending Westminster school in Rutherford county, is spend ing the Christmas holidays at home. W. L. Cannon and family, Mrs: Murphy and Mrs. G. G. Weaver of Spartanburg; Miss Eunice Green, Perry and Max. Green of Greenville, S. C, are spending Christmas with F. L. Weaver. Monday morning the lowest thermometer reading of the sea son so far was probably reached, registering in the neighborhood of ten degrees. Six degrees was recorded at Log Cabin Inn. The ice on the falls was very heavy. VenieRevan was tried before magistrate N. T. Mills Saturday on a warrant sworn out by C. C. Constant charging her with keeping a disorderly house near Lynn. The evidence was suffici ent to bind her over to court and the magistrate placed her under a $200 bond to appear at the spring term. Chas. Ponder of Polk county, has moved here with his family and will occupy the house recent ly vacated by Poe W. Eskridge. Mr. Ponder has sold his fine farm in Polk and comes here to em bark in the lumber business. We are always glad towelcome good citizens like this to our town. Rutherford Sun. .. . Geo. B. Logan, manager of the Tryon Hosiery, Company's store at Lynn, was in town this week. Mr, Logan says the new mill the company is now erecting at Flat Rock will be used only to knit and loop the hosiery, which will then be sent to the Lynn mill for finishing. Misses Lillie and Lizzie Weaver entertained at a delightful re ception and dance Wednesday evening in honor of their guests, Miss Eunice Green and Messrs. Perry and Max Green of Green ville county, S. C. The drawing room and dining hall were pret tilydecorated with holly, mistle toe and cedar. Ambrosia and fruit cake was served. T h e dining hall had been cleared and the old fashioned country dances, Virginia reel and quadrille were enjoyed by those who dance. Among the guests present were J. E. Shipman, B. F. Williams, W. C. Corcoran, t John Arledge, Ralph McFarland, Misses Flor ence, and Helen Westlake, Min nie and Sallie Arledge, Maude Croker, Eliza Newman, Colum bus; Geo. Official notice has been given of . a. rural ; free delivery route to be established here commencing February 17th; Civil service examination for ap pointee will be held Jannary 9th and applications must be filed on or before that date. r The route covers a little over twenty-four miles and the itiner ary is about as follows: From here to Valhalla, thence down the valley to Screven's, over the Pacolet and across the country to John Carpenter's and R. L. Hamilton's and back again to Hellman 's, returning t o Tryon via Lamort's. The carrier must reside -here or on the route. The salary is $720 the year.! In order to establish a route one hundred families must be served, The heads of one hund red and forty families were sub mitted of which one hundred and seven were accepted. Town council met Friday and granted the franchises for a wa ter works and electric light sys tem substantially as asked for by the petitioners, Geo. O. Fer guson and Todd Russell of New York. The franchises are sepa rate and distinct and cover a pe riod of thirty-five years each, the first to be in operation with in a period of two years from date and the second in five.
