In May and June, ISO glr\s (4-H) participated in local dress revues. Winners presented a county reyue. Forty-three 4-H steers J&ere exhib ited by Duplin 4-Hersfc the Kin ston and Wilmington 'Livestock Shows and Sales. Bobby* Good son, Duplin 4-H'er exhibited the ' .Grand Champion steer in bom Shows. Southeastern District Cot which Duplin is a part) Demonstration Day was held in SampsoH County in June. Duplin 4-H'ers participated in 13 events with 3 declared district winners. One members )^as elected district Secretary- treasurer. , Fifty-five 4-H'ers and leaders spent the week of June: 25-30 at Camp Shaub, Waynesville, N. C. Twenty-five persons attended and participated in State events at State 4-H Club Week in ftaleigh in late July. Throughout the summer, 4-H girls from 3 clubs conducted a pilot study for the N. C. Extension Ser vice on Canning. The Council planned and prepar ed an educational exhibit for the Duplin Co. Fair. The exhibit was awarded a blue ribbon. At County Achievement Day, Ap proximately 200 people viewed the 250 project exhibits, county winners in various fields were named. Several Duplin 4-H'ers were nam ed district project winners and one was named State Winner and rece ived aq expense paid trip to Chica go to National Club Congress. The youth are among 2.285,(100 yquth the belong to more than 94,700 clubs in urban, suburban, and rural areas through out the United States and Puerto Riceo. Duplin County has 18. Among the special 4-H Week activities plan ned for Duplin County are the Coun ty Council Meeting, March 4. Agri cultural Building, Kenansville fol lowed by the County and Public Speaking Contest. Each club will plan and prepare a 4-H exhibit or bulletin board in observance of Na tional Club Week. This year's 4-H Week observance has a number of local and national aims-among them: To focus on 19 63's citizenship-in-action goals for members, to emphasize career ex ploration and the value of wise de cision-making regarding vocational choices, influence more boys and i girls 9 to 19 years of age to join or form 4-H Clubs, acquaint more par ents with 4-H and seek their co operation, encourage capable and youth-minded men and women to volunteer as local leaders, honor 4-H friends locally and nationally, and express appreciation for the important part they play. In Washington, D. C., the Week will be highlighted by a team of1 4-H ers representing m embers j ^vetywhere, wire dgtU-?iy? tfie an nual '"'4-H Report to the "Nation." The report will review in story and I pictures outstanding 4-H achieve I merits and current projects. While in the Nation's Capital, the report er-delegates will visit the White House, meet members of Congress, i nign government officials, and oth er national leaders. After a short stay in Washington, they expect to go elsewhere for a few days to meet with other 4-H friends. Assisting Club members with 4-111 Week events in all States will be i 307,750 men and women who serve as unpaid volunteer leaders, and guide 4-H work in local communi ties across the country. The main aims of the 94,700 local 4-H clubs in all 50 states and Pure to Kico, are character development and good citizenship. Specifically, ' 4-H stresses the mental, physical, social, and spiritual growth of you- j ng people by helping them to: 1. Gain knowledge, skills, and j qualities for a happy home life. 2. Enjoy useful work, responsibi lity, and satisfaction in accomplish ment. 3. Value research and learn scien-, tific methods of decision-making ] and problem solving. 4 Know how scientific agriculture and home economics relate to our economy. 5. Explore carre opportunities and continue needed education. 6. Appreciate nature, understand, conservation, and use resources wisely. 7. Foster healthful living, pur- J poseful recreation, and constructive leisure. 8. Strengthen personal standards and philosophies. Acquire traits, attitudes, and un derstanding to work well with oth ers. 10. Develop leadership talents and abilities to become, better citizens.
