Lessie Horton. ?f Seven Springs were in Mary land several days last week to attend funeral services for a brother of Mrs. Horton. Mike Whitley of New Bern spent the weekend with his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Maxwell. MISS MARY ADNA EDWARDS PASSES Miss Mary Adna Edwards. 77 of Kernersville, RFD died, Thursday, March 19, at Win ston-Salem Hospital after IS years of declining health, and 13 days critical illness. She was a native of Todd County and a daughter of the late Henry Clay and Josephine Bor en Edwards. Miss Edwards was the first Home Demonstration agent in Lenoir County, and had also worked in Rowan and Bun combe counties. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Friday from the Main Street Methodist Church of whi ch she was a member, in Ker nersville. Rev. Jack Caudill of ficiated, and burial was in Mt. Dur Cemetery. Miss Edwards was known to many in Pink Hill where she had visited in the home of her brother, Dr. H. A. Edwards. Other surviving relatives are a number of nieces and nephews. CHRISTIAN CHAPEL HOME DEM. CLUB MEETS Mrs. William B. Tyndall was hostess to the Christian Chapel Home Demonstration club at her home Monday afternoon, March 16. The president, Mrs. William Horace Howard presid ed. The devotional was given by Mrs. W. B. Tyndall. Mrs. Roscoe Stroud gave the demonstration on. Sweet Pota toes on Your Menu. Each mem ber prepared and brought to the meeting something made of sweet potatoes, which were ser ved as refreshments. Mrs. Roscoe Stroud, home management leader reported on. Refinishing Wrought Iron. Mrs. William B. Tyndall, fam ily Life leader, reported on. Chape rones-Good and Bad. 3 members and one visitor, Mrs. Andrew Thomas, attended. The April meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Italph Taylor, Mrs. Oscar Tyndall, Mrs. Floyd Dail and Mrs. Horace Howard from the club, attend ed a Leader Training School, held at the Agriculture Bulld ing. in Kinston the next day, itorc* v. " SMITH'S COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CLUB MEETS The regular 3rd. Tuesday night supper meeting of the Smith's Community Develop ment Club was held at the Com munity Building March, 16. The president, Emmett Rogers was in charge. Prank Boyette, Mgr. of the Coastal Plain Vegetable Experiment Station, at Paison was present, and showed films on Gardening. He also gave a most informative talk. The club voted to have a bar becue supper April 4, and tick ets will be on sale for $1.00 each. Proceeds will go to the Building Committee fund. POLIO VACCINE CLINIC SUCCESS A total of 2S73 persons took the Stop Polio Sabin vaccine given at the Pink Hill High School clinic Sunday afternoon, according to a report from clinic coordinator Prank Wiley. The other two will be held April 19 and May 17. self-help medical course ends The Instructions on Artificial Respiration by Dr. William A. Pate of Beulaville brought to an end the Self-help Medical course aponeored by Civil De fense at the Smith'* Commun ity Building Friday night. Dr. Pate used a Reacusi-Anne fur nished by the health depart ment to illustrate. Other Instructors have been Dr. Corbetl Quinn, Dr. E. L. Boyette. Dr. John Powers, Mrs. Bob S. Herring. Miss Thetana Dilday and Mr. Ralph Cottle, director of Civil Defenae for Duplin County. There was an enrollment of 56 at the beginning, but Just how many receiving certificate credit we did not learn. CELEBRATING BIRTHDAY Charles Newman is celebrat ing his Slst. birthday on Good Friday, March 27th. He also is celebrating his 26th. year in North Carolina.. He now has two songs ready for publica tion. (The Death of King Jes us",) and (The Death of a President) the late president Kennedy. The first song, is on tape at B. F. Grady School. MRS. WESTBROOK CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY Mrs. Sallie West brook, a pat ient in the South wing of the Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville, spent Sunday at her home, and was honored at a dinner on her 32nd. birthday by her children. Barbecue, a long with a regular picnic din ner, was served. She received an array of useful gifts from her loved ones. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey Smith, Robert Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Earl D. Smith. Lt. and Mrs. Albert S. Smith and sons of Jacksonville, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Smith, Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Smith, Jr.. and children of Hillsboro, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stroud, and Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Wayne Stroud of Kenansville, and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Frederick Stroud and daughter of New Bern. WOODLAND 4-H The Woodland 4-H Club met on Thursday. March 18th at the Smith Community Building. Anthony Westbrook, president. presided/The pledges were led by Dianne Rankin and Keith Westbrook gave the devotional. During the business session the group discussed the county wide corn project to be carried out for the benefit of the 4-H Development Fund. An outing wos~4lso discussed. Anthony Westbrook present ed the program on Health. His demonstration was entitled "The Teeth and Their Care." This was illustrated by Charts and posters. A question and answer period followed the demonstration. Emily Marshburn had charge of recreation. Henry C. West brook. Emily and Billy Marsh burn served refreshments dur ing the social hour. The Pack is sponsored by the Pink Hill Methodist Church and W. E. Brewer is the institutional re presentative. The Scout com mittee includes Carl Ward, J. L. Hood and Wilbur Tyndall. Den 3 gave the opening cere mony which was followed by dinner being served. Later Den 1 gave a skit entitled. SHOWER HONORS COUPLE Miss Myrtle Wiggins and Mr. Frederick Quinn. whose mar riage took place at l p. m Sunday at the Comfort Christ ian Church were honored at a shower at the VFW Hut in Pink Hill Friday night. Hostesses were Mrs. Bessie Quinn and Mrs. Thomas H. Quinn. Games were led by Miss Ma xine Quinn. The table was covered with a white linen cloth and was cen tered with an arrangement of pink flowers. At ooe end. the bride-groom's mother. Mrs. Leslie Quinn poured punch, and at the opposite end cake squar es were served by Mrs. Joe Wiggins, sister-in-law of the bride. Mints and toasted pe cans were served buffet style. There were approximately St) guerts, including the following from out of the community - Mrs. Robert L. FLOATING SHOWER To honor Miss Norma Grey Wilmouth and Mr. Henry Guy whose marriage will be solem nized at the Pink Hill Metho dist Church at 4 p. m. Easter Sunday. Miss Linda Wilmouth Mrs. Dempsey Hill and Mrs. Vernon Heppler entertained at a floating shower in the recrea tion department of the church Saturday night. The table was covered with a pink and white linen cloth and centered with an all-white floral arrangement. Mrs. Sed rick Wilmouth, mother of the bride-elect poured punch from one end and Mrs. Winfred Guy, the groom's mother served cake from the opposite end. Mints and salted nuts were passed. Approximately 45 relatives and friends of the couple at tended. North Caro lina. ?* m~> irj * . tS Rose Hill Jayceei The Roee Hill Jaycees plan to hold a Variety Show Friday Night, April 3rd in the Rose HiU Elementary School, says Mr. Leo Jones, chairman pro ject. Performers from through-out the area will be asked to take part in the show. Many have I already promised to make an appearance. Mr. George Tur ner and son from Potter's Hill will be on hand to do some old fashioned banjo picking and singing. Mr. Donald Abernathy, renowed local artist of the "Folk Song" field, will bring along his "Uke" and give voice to some favorite folk songs. Leo Jones will try to revive the "Rose Hill Combo' for the show, and will also do some nu mbers himself. Plans are un der way to secure "Van John son and his group" of singers for the show. Leo Jones, Jaycee project chairman, says "A first class show, requires a first class master of ceremonies and we have just that in Mr. Del Strick land of WLSE Radio in Wal lace," Mr. Strickland has long been associated with show bus iness and is a good musician and singer himself.
