Mental Admissions Increase Admissions to North Caro lina's mental hospitals are in creasing at the rate of 1,000 per year, according to a report is sued itoday by Dr. Myron G. Sandifer, Director of Research for the State Department of Mental Health. Admissions during the fiscal year 1963-64 just completed, to taled 11,900 as compared with 10,826 admissions during the previous year. The yearly increase of roug hly 1,000 admissions has con tinued relatively unchanged since 1957, when total admis sions amounted to 4,000. Approvimately 55% of ad missions to the state psychia tric hospitals are entering for the first time, Sandifer explain ed. But 45% are readmissions, that is, they have been treat ed in the state hospitals at least once before. He described the first 60 days after dischar ge as the "critical period" in the patients' readjustment to home and community. "hTis is the period during which paj ients are most likely to return to the hospital." In interpreting the figures. Dr. Sandifer pointed out that in spite of steadily climbing admission rates, discharges from the hospitals have kept pace with admissions. This means, he said, that the state hospitals are treating and dis charging many times the num ber of patients today than they were a few years ago. At the same time, he caution ed that the problem of ever increasing admissions is one that the state psychiatric in stitutions are likely to face for many years to come.
