MTIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
THE BIATHLON
The Biathlon is a combined
skiing and rifle shooting event.
It was added to the winter Ga
mes during the 1960 Olympics.
The Biathlon unites the endur
ance and skill necessary for
long distance cross-country ski
racing with the concentration
and care essential for excel
lent rifle marksmanship. The
competitors traverse a 20 kil
ometer course (12.5 miles)
stopping four times to fire at
targets at a distance of 150
meters. At the first and third
stops the shooting is done In
the prone position; at the se
cond and fourth stops shooting
Is in the standing position. The
winner is the person scoring the
lowest total time for skiing the
course plus added penalty time
based on his shooting perfor
mance. Biathlon shooting con
sists of twenty (20) shots, five
fired each of the four times the
shooter comes to the target
area. The blathlete skis five
(5) kilometers before the initial
firing point is reached and
at least three (3) kilometers
are travelled between the fol
lowing flrlngposltlons. The ski
ing tune of each competitor is
clocked and two minutes are
added for each shot missed.
E. g., the winner of the 1965
U.S. Biathlon Championship was
Charles Kellogg. His "Running
Time' was 1 tour. 20 minutes
and 44 seconds (1:20.44}. His
shooting penalty was 8 minutes
(8) giving him a Total Time
of 1 tour 28 minutes and 44
seconds (1.28. 44).
The majority of U. S. com
petitors are former collegiate
cross-country skiers who be
came Interested In this event
after entering the military ser
vice. According to an article.
Skiing and Shooting, by Lt. Wil
liam A. Spencer, U. S. Army,
appearing In the AMERICAN
RIFLEMAN Magazine the offi

Rifle Association, "A few pro
ficient marksmen have been
persuaded to try their ability

takes a much longer time to
develop the necessary profici
ency In cross-country skiing
than In the type of shooting

Smith Community Club will be
held, Tuesday, March IS, with
a picnic supper at 6 p.m. The
meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
pal organizations that furnish
participants for biathlon com
petition.
THE USSA. however, is the
major source for U. S. Bia
thlon competitors, having near
ly 300 competitive cross-coun
try skiers among Its present
membership. An interesting
fact is that most USSA members
were unfamiliar with the bia
thlon until entering the mili
tary service.
The Army has a Biathlon
Training Center at Fort Ri
chardson, Alaska, where faci
lities are provided at thetraln
ing center. An example of the
fine coaches provided is M/Sgt.
Clyde w. Burns, USA. Sgt.
Burns, co-author of Skiing and
Shooting, and a Distinguished
Rifleman is presently assigned
as Rifle Coach/instructor with
the u. S. Biathlon Team. He is
a former coach and operation's
sergeant with the Army Marks
manship Training Unit, Ft. Ben
ning, Georgia.
Tne u. S. has sent biathlon
competitors to world Cham
pionships and Olympics since
1958. An eighth place in 1959
World Championships is the
best showing by an American
blathlete in international ga
mes.
Biathlon rules permit the
use of a rifle of any caliber up
to 8 mm. It must be a man
ually oo
ually operated rifle capable of
firing shots singly and may not
have telescopic sights. The ri
fle used by most U. S. compe
titors is tne Winchester Model
70 action with 26" medium
heavy barrel in caliber . 308.
The shooting is usually done
under adverse conditions. Nor
mal outdoor conditions are of
course present; wind, tempera
ture, light and reflection. In
addition to these, high pulse
and respiration rates, possible
falling snow, and increasing
fatigue combine to affect the
shooter's marksmanship. Other
factors such as proper trigger
control in extremely cold wea
ther and the steam, created
bv the warm body temperature
of tie contestant and the gen
erally cold air, tend to harass
the shooter.
The Rosen dale Nordic Ski
Club at Rosedale, New York,
in cooperation with the U.S. !
Ski Association (USSA) will hold
on January 23rd, the 1966 U.S.
Biathlon Championships. This
event is sanctioned by the u. S.
Modem Pentathlon Association
and will determine the selection
of the U. S. team which will
compete in the World Biathlon
Championships at Garmlsch
Partenklrchen, Germany early
in February.
The Biathlon Is an event that
Is run as the old saying goes,
"all together, simultaneously
and at the same time." This
is perhaps the greatest appeal
and undoubtly is its biggest
challenge.
