This provides a holiday climate for visitors and vacationers who seek fun and frolic st the seashore. The beach and boardwalk share the summer spot light with many Activities: swim ming. hosting, water skiing, surf fishing, surfing, stores and restaurants are all excit ing adventures. Accomodations are extensive and complete for overnight, weekends, or vacations. Summer Schedule Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry Raleigh - The summer sche dule for theSoulhport-FortFis her Ferry goes Into effect Fri day, May 23, according to E. H. Baggs, Ferry Operations Mana Deep sea fishing and pier fishing Is also available; at least three charter boats are at your service. Many hotels, motels, and inns, make up the resort living area of the beach, cottages and camping areas are also avail able. The camping area attracts thousands annually. Plans have recently been an nounced to organize and con struct a golf course. This will be a significant addition to the area. Carolina Beach has the added advantage of being well suited for a year-round residency. It has a mild and envigoratlng climate, it Is a complete com munity having Its own school, churcnes, library, water and sewer facilities and many types of businesses. Since the ferry was dedicated at Southport on March 2 this year, It has been opearting on a tour-trip schedule. But now with the opening of the tourist sea son a new schedule Is being put into effect. The summer schedule for the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry Is as follows; Leave Southport 6:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m? 12:00 Noon. 2:00 p.m.. 4:00 p.m. Leave Fort Fisher 7:00 a.m., 9:00 ajn., 11:00 a.m. , 1:00. p.m., 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. The Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry is the newest link In the New Hanover-Brunswick County tourist area and allows tourists In the FORT Flsher Carollna Beach resort region to travel to the historic sites of Brunswick County without the 40-mile trip through Wilming ton. Fares for vehicles on the ferry are $1.50 per vehicle and 50 cents per person. Lower Cape Fear B Tour Is Planned WILMINGTON?Plans are shaping up (or establishing a 68-mile scenic, cultural, nis trical and recreational tour (or visitors to the Lower Cape Fear area this season. Civic, business and educa tional interests in both New Hanover and Bruswick Coun ties are showing interest in the plan. An announcement is expected soon. Under the proposed sched ule now being considered, the one-day tour probably would start by bus in Wilmington. Al ter first stopping at several o( the numerous historic and scenic points in and near the city, it would proceed to South port. Among points to be visited would be Old Brunswick Town, Orton Plantation, the battleship USS North Caro lina. and Forts Johnston and Caswell at Southport. Then, crossing the river on the new State-operated (erry, the tour ists would see the Civil War stronghold, Fort Fisher, with its Museum and V;s?tors Cen ter; the U. S. Air Force's modern radar installation nearby; Kure and Carolina beaches, the 65-foot-h i g h bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway, which a((ords a magnificent view of the Atlan tic Ocean; Airlie Gardens and Wrightsville Beach. The Cape Fear Technical Institute is cooperating with officials of the two counties. Fort Fisher Center Open CAROLINA BEACH - The State's new and handsome Fort Fisher Visitor Center and Museum near Carolina Beach is open daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sun days from 1:30 to 5 p.m. The museum contains many telics of the great sea and land battle there in 1865, when the Union navy and army closed the Port of Wilmington by capturing the fort in a three-day fight. Wilmington was the last major Confederate fort to fall, virtually dooming the Southern ca- e by cutting off supplies from England and the Caribbean. No charge is made for admission to the museum.
