Letter To The Editor
October 3. 1982
TO THE EDITOR:
In reference to two articles
in your paper recpntly, it
seems that whoever gave the
information blames the"
Magnolia Town Board fot1
their advice to demolish the
Depot. On behalf of the
present Town Board, we
would like to set the records
straight.
The present Board has had
very little information from
our Mayor concerning the
Depot, but in talking to
citi/.ens of the community
and some of the committee,
referral to in your paper, we
have acquired the following
information.
It seems that a prior Town
Board purchased the Depot
Building with the under
standing that they would
ninvp if off the railroaH
property. They also bought a
lot next to the depot with
intentions of moving it. They
have asked a number of
contractors about moving it
and have never had one to
give a figure. They said that
the brick had decayed from
the ground about four feet up
the walls which left the
Board to believe that they
meant that it either could not
be moved or was not ad
visablc to try. The Town then
asked the Railroad Company
about restoring it where it
stands. The Railroad
Company said that the. the
Town, would have to put a
tall fence on the track side of
the building and remove part
of the platform. The land
would still belong to the
Railroad Company, only the
building to the town. They
also stated that regardless of
how much money was spent
on it. the Railroad Company
could give the Town 90 days
notice and taki it back with
no questions asked. The
Railroad Company also re
quires the Town to carry one
million dollars Liability In
surance policy on the build
ing as well as paying rent on
the land.
Therefore, we feel that the
depot with such options from
the Roalroad Company is a
liability instead of an asset to
the town.
Respectfully yours,
Ruth Quinn. Commissioner
