Wallace-Rose Hill, James Kenan Duel For Second Place In ECC TIGER FIELD - Senior halfback Johnny Artis rushed for 167 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead second-ranked North Duplin to a 27-0 East Central 2-A Conference victory over rival James Kenan. The win kept the unbeaten Rebels in first place in the ECC with a perfect 7-0 overall and 5-0 mark in the conference. James Kenan slipped to third place following the shut-out to North Duplin with an overall 5-2 and 3-2 league record. The Rebels avenged their loss to the Tigers of a year ago as their bid for a 2-A football playoff berth ended. As Coach Kenneth Avent said, "It was such a sweet victory. We had a lot of people who just played so well. The entire defense did such an outstanding job con taining James Kenan's offense." James Kenan's offense turned the ball over at least a dozen times to the Rebels and the defense just made too many mental mistakes. Artis. an outstanding college prospect, along with Charlie Showers (two field goals. 26-33 yarders) Ralph Britt, Owight Armwood and Kenneth Barfield held the Tigers to an all-time low 91 yards total offense. JK's top gainer. Joseph Hand, netted 38 of the S3 yards rushing and with a real good job of blocking could have helped turn the bail game around. In a nutshell, you cant give up the ball on that many fumbles and even look pretty good. North Duplin can look for fair competition against East Duplin, but James Kenan better hold their head up or the Dogs may just bite the heck out of those Cats. Wallace-Rose Hill has long awaited this very moment to revenge all those bad lick ings by archrival Janies Kenan, plus second place in the ECC may just ride on this game. Wallace-Rose Hill's super star running back Rufus Satchel! rushed for 137 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 37-6 V*P over winless Union High. The victory upped Wallace Rose Hill's record to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the East Central 2-A Conference. Satchell scored on runs of eight, three and six yards as Wallace-Rose Hill moved into a commanding 22-0 halftime lead. Satchell ha? gained almost 1.000 veards over the season and would like a 100-yards-plus game against James Kenan to help his cause. Willie Williams scored on a 73-yard run as Lakewood defeated South Lenoir 25-12 in an important ECC game, t Lakewood (3-3, 3-4) will visit Ayden-Grifton this week. Bobby Crumpler was a one-man-show for Hobbton as he rushed for 358 yards and four touchdowns in a 36-19 victory over East Duplin. Crumpler. 190 pound senior, ran 50, 59, 2 and 11 for his performance. Frank Brown scored twice on runs of 34 and 2 yards for East Duplin and Keith Strick land added a TD to total 19 for the Panthers. Support your team.
