Joe Lanier Son ?< * Has James Kenan High School been short-changed? Some folks seem to think so. So let's explore. There has for quite some time been a plan to consolidate James Kenan High School and North Duplin High School. This plan has existed even though , neither school area wants the | combination, each wants their community school. . * .Politics has kept the plan from being discussed openly. However, as the plan has existed in the past, improvements have not been made to the school. . .James Kjcnan is the only high school in Duplin County that does not have the 9th grade on its campus. James Kenan has the smallest library and media center of any Duplin County high school. Mobile classroom units dot the campus. There is not even enough room to house the 1 Oth through the l^th grade students. Some of these shortcomings can also be seen at North Duplin High School. . .There is no support for a consolidated high school ? morally or ^ financially. . I am sorry to say the students at James W Kenan and North Duplin will suffer for many years to come because of this unworkable plan. 'When the money was available and prices were down, tltt foresight of the school board and administration looked to- "bigger is better." not "small is quality." Now the rovenue sharing that once paid for these school improvements is being consumed by the general fund of tlye county. This money was at one time put into bricks and mortar and is now being put into running the county. This change about came. I think, because of inexperience and the inability to see beyond today ? and, of course, ^ politics. . .This is the way it began ? a practically new " board and a new county manager. . .The county commissioners cut the tax rate ? a loss of $150,000. . .tfien added a county manager at a cost of about $100.(XX). . The two together comes to $250,000. . .Three years ago, to pick up the slack, they began to consume the revenue slvaring money that was once used to build schools. Needless to say. the $250,000 has grown as has inflation. . .To get Duplin County back on track is going to take some drastic moves, some admission of mistakes, some unpolitical moves, and some fact-facing. . It is going to require the county commissioners to once again run the county. . .Duplin County has been a progressive county; it P lias a fine reputation throughout North Carolina, but it is living on its past ? it is fast becoming a Detroit or New Yqrk as far as money goes. . . But. back to James Kenan. I am getting a little off the track. The county commissioners are supposed to furnish the money tor new buildings, but all the blame cannot be plqccd on their shoulders. Even if money had been made available, the school would not have been improved due to the plan for joining JK and ND. There is in the planning stage, another plan for Duplin schools' future. This plan, to be approved bv the school board, is due in about 60 days. It will be interesting to sec if the consolidation high school is still a priority. In my opinion, it is an idea whose ^ days have passed. It is now time to put money and effort into James Kenan and North Duplin to bring those schools up to par. To ignore them much further, in my opinion, would be criminal. . . 19th * Hole We wish you the very best golfing year ever. . .See you on the links. ***** Fore.
