Jofc Lanier son of 4 _g^j Yesterday in Raleigh. Duplin and Jones counties officially got themselves a new rep- m resentative in the state House as Wendell Murphy was sworn- in. If this young agrthusinessman from Rose Hill is one-tenth as success ful in Raleigh as he has been in private business. Duplin and Jones County will reap many benefits. . .There was l whole lot of swearing-in going on in Raleigh yester day. It was a swearing time in a swearing town. There was another swearing-in ceremony in which Duplin and Jones County will both be well represented, and that w as w hen Senator Harold Hardison once again took his oath of office. With these two men looking out for our interests in Raleigh. I think wc will be in the good for two years. We will watch and kl'C Il seems those folks in Washington who are trying to make things work like a Utopia and have no foresight, have once helped us by costing us. This time it was the telephone long distance monopoly they broke up. . . .And, thanks to them, we will he looking at telephone bills from double to triple what they are now Of course long distance bills will be less, and this will help a few. but the majority of the telephone users ill find their bills rising. II all the informa tion being printed and talked about is correct about the changes in the telephone rates, then il will be cheaper to call a person in Kala mazoo Michigan, and have them > all your neighbor and relax vnur message ? cheape r than for you to call yi 'iir nest -door neighbor. It you think politicians are a bunch that don't look out for themselves. I suggest you consider the latest ncrease in salary they just added for themselves ? some over yi.ODO. The Congressmen in Washington. I am talking about, . Sometime before this past election, a couple of options were passed with some fancy lawyer wording that no one really paid any attention to that is outside of the politicians themselves. . .This new rule, or option or bill or whatever you might want to call it ? said in simple terms. . .The Con gressmen or Congress persons. whichever, were to receive a cost-of-living in crease of. let's say, 516,000. . .Now. it is a multiple choice rule. . If you vote "no" for the $16,000, you automatically get $9,000. . .However, both options can not be voted away. . .If you vote against one, you get the other. . So the Congressmen can come home and say, "1 voted against the big raise. However, the other Con gressmen made me take a $9,000 raise.". . .That may sound amusing, but there are plenty of people whose total salary does not amount to that increase, and these people are paying taxes to make that increase possible. ***** If you would like to see some old photographs of Duplin County, the place to be is the Rose Hill Restau rant on Saturday at the Historical Society meeting. Sonny Sykes has gone about Duplin County photo graphing some treasured family pictures. He now has them on slides and will show them Saturday at 12 noon. . . Son-of-a-Gun. . .
