Contest Opens j Dental Health Month The first statewide dental ^ealth contest with a $500 cash award to the winning school, will highlight North Carolina's 1983 Children's Dental Health Month in Feb ruary. "Let's Get Dental" is the theme for the contest. It is being sponsored by the N.C. Dental Society, the Dental Health Section of the State Division of Health Ser vices and the N.C. Depart Cent of Public Instruction to ake young people aware of the importance of good oral health. According to Dr. Bill Quarles, statewide chairman for 1983 Children's Dental Health Month, school prin cipals have been asked to decide if their schools will participate in the contest. "Awards will be deter mined based on the number of points a school earns by completing specific activities prepared by the planning committee throughout the month of February," Dr. Quarles said. "Points will be awarded to the school for such activities as having a dental display in the school library, holding a non-sweet snack day or conducting PTA programs related to dental health." Dr. Quarles stated. "Gassroom teachers can add to their school's point total by scheduling dental health activities, such as conducting a fluoride mouthrinse pro gram or asking a dentist to visit and talk to students as part of their classroom cur riculum." i Principals may add points to their school's overall score by actively participating. Superintendents and administrators can also give a boost to the winning school's score by participa ting. First prize will be a state dental health trophy and cash award of $500, with district winners receiving a $100 prize. The cash prizes are being offered by the N.C. Dental Society and its local affiliates. "We're asking individual dentists and local dental societies to urge schools in their area to participate and to offer their assistance with contest activities," Dr. Quarles said. "We want our young people to recognize i| the importance of good n dental health care.'' li For more information, H contact Grave W. Newton at \ 296-0941. We have State fans who are contributing toward dinner for the visiting students for they come with no pay except for their strong love and fulfilment from the music they sing. I would urge our people of Duplin County to come and listen to this beautiful and wonderful r-v'nd of 85 voices blending in harmony, hope rr. 1 beau tiful music." In 1977, a small group of students expressed a desire to form a gospel choir on the campus of NCSU. Under the leadership of Mrs. Eleania Ward, director, and Ronald Foreman, student accom panist and director, the New Horizons Choir was organ ized. The choir has grown to its current enrollment and is the largest black organi zation on campus. It is affiliated with the music department and offers one hour of credit to participants. The repertoire covers spiri tuals to contemporary gospel music. The choir serves as a recruitment vehicle for minority high school stu dents and performs in area churches as well as college campuses around the state. Student leadership is en couraged and in the spring of '82 the choir released its first album. "Through Faith We Build," consisting of all ori ginal music by the choir members. "When 1 found that the choir was coming," Says Ms. Creech, "1 ordered their record. I have been totally impressed. Their music swings and skips and lifts and rises in beautiful sound. If I put their record on while I'm doing my housework. I'm through before 1 know it. It's the best thing to lighten a load that I know of. " There will be no charge for the concert, but a love-offer ing will be taken. Duplin County is cordially invited to attend at .8 p.m., Friday, . Feb. 4, at the Warsaw- Jr. High School.
