Two hundred and forty six fire and rescue personnel attended from 14 south eastern counties in the state. This number included two participants who came from as far as South Carolina and Maryland. Dr. Carl Price, president of JSTC, welcomed the parti cipants and introduced State Senator Harold Hardison and State Representative Weldell Murphy, who also welcomed the group to Duplin County. This seminar provided the opportunity to analyze past aircraft crash incidents in detail to become familiar with crash incident problems, appropriate pro cedures and aircraft struc ture; and to understand pre incident planning for such emergencies involving mass casualties. Emmel Coggins, fire service training specialist at JSTC, stated that the pro gram was a success and he was pleased with the large number of participants. Stroud of Kenansville has volunteered her services at E.E. Smith Junior High School for the past two school years. Mrs. Stroud works mainly i* the school library where she does clerical work, including checking out books to stu dents, assisting in arranging bulletin boards, circulating audio-visual materials and equipment, and alphabetiz ing and indexing. Mrs. Stroud is the wife of Henderson Stroud, a barber at Camp Lejeune. She is the mother of two daughters: Marlene, an honor student at James Sprunt Technical College, and Charlena, an honor student at James Kenan High School. Mrs. Stroud is enrolled in several educational classes at JSTC to further her edu cation. "Going back to school and working in the school system are two rewarding and challenging experiences, she says. WINS PEACE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP Julie Carl ton. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Carlton of War saw. has been awarded a S400 Merit Scholarship to attend Peace College in Raleigh. Julie is a James Kenan High School senior where she is a member of the National Honor Society and the tennis and Softball teams. Julie also takes an active role in the recently formed drama club at James Kenan. 4-H Fire Safety Program l _ HCCnriatA Duplin County 4-H. in cooperation with the Duplin County Volunteer Fire De partment. will be conducting a four-week 4-H Fire Safety program, which is aimed at reaching fourth and fifth graders throughout the county. Firemen from local fire departments within their re spective communities, have ' volunteered their knowledge to conduct tjhe sessions. Students will attend the classes one night per week for four consective weeks. Each session will run about 1'/] hours and will begin the week of Feb. 7. The program will concen trate on teaching young people how to prevent home fires and the proper steps to take should a fire occur. All sessions will be taught at the local fire station and begin at 7:30 p.m. This week. Ray Rhinehart, 4-H, will be visiting the students to give each an opportunity to enroll in the program. Parents of children who sign up will receive a letter from the 4-H Office detailing the program, listing the schedule for their local fire department and asking for their support. Each student attending three of the four sessions will receive a certificate. In addi tion, at the conclusion of the program, each participating fire department will select a five-person team to partici pate in a countywide 4-H fire safety quiz bowl. The first and second place teams will win the right to represent the county in the regional 4-H Fire Safety Quiz Bowl to be held in May. According to Rhinehart, over 300 Duplin young people have participated in the pi >gram the past two years and many favorable { reports have been received from students, parents i.nd firemen who have attended the classes.
