FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIPS - Two North Duplin High School seniors have signed football scholarships. Johnny Artis of Route 1. Faison. signed with Wake Forest ^ University, and Ralph Britt of Route 2, Mount Olive, Will be attending North Carolina State University. Pictured above, left to right. ND Students Sign Football Scholarships North Duplin High School students Ralph Britt and Johnnv Artis sipned football scholarships Feb. 8. Britt will attend North Carolina | State University and Artis, " Wake Forest University. Johnny Artis is the son of Manerva Artis of Route 1, Faison. He played running back with the Rebels and averaged 6.9 yards a carry during his high school foot ball career. Playing under Coach Ken Avent. Artis scored 20 touchdowns and carried the football for 4.104 .yards. During the 1982 F season, he had a total rushing yardage of 2,030. At the conclusion of the 1982 season. Artis was named All Fast All Conference and All State Honorable Mention. "I was very impressed by head Coach Al Groh," Artis said. "I have been recruited to play the position of running back and defensive back." The North Duplin . High School senior plans to 9 study computer science at Wake Forest. Artis was also recruited and offered football scholarships at the Univer sity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. North Carolina State University of Raleigh. A&T State University in Greensboro, and Fayetteville State University. "Our coaches (Ken Avent and Jim Saint-Antand) have ^ supported us in everything," Ralph Britt said. "They have been a big part of our success because the coaches have been with us all the time and tried to teach us the right things to do. I don't think I could have made it this far under any other coaches; they have been as close to us as a father." Britt has been recruited to play the tightend position. At North Duplin he played tightend. linebacker and punted. With the Rebels. Britt totaled 35 catches and 700 yards during the 1982 season. He was named All-East All Con ference this season. Ralph is the son of Lois and Ralph Britt of Route 2, Mount Olive. "I liked the new coaching staff and Tom Reed." Britt explained. "And. I feel like NC'SU's football team will be a real power next year." Britt plans to study agri cultural economies at NC'SU.
