Smith Junior High School celebrated Black History Week Feb. 7-11, according to Zettie Williams, teacher.^Even though Feb ruary fs Afro-American History Month. E.E. Smith presented its highlights on the above dates. The theme is "The United States Con stitution and the Black American." The social studies department served as the planning committee. Each department pre sented an activity daily showing the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. Such activities included posters, research papers, supplementary readings, quizzes, speeches, skits, panels, bulletin board displays, listening to record ings and viewing films and Itlmstrips. All of the activi ties culminated Friday with an assembly program. During this program. 18 consultants of various careers gave an overview of their attainments followed by a question, answer and ob servation period. The con sultants were Henry Moore Jr.. trooper with the NX. State Patron of Raleigh; Mrs. Inez Hodges. R.N., Duplin County Health Department; Dr. Doris Butts. M.D., Duplin Medical Center; John Wolfe. Ph.D.. Fayetteville Stale University; Miss Marilvn Thompson. Ivric soprano of LaGrange; W.T. Stokes, educator of Clinton; Rudolph Bccton. barber of Magnolia; Miss Gloria Han kins. cosmetologist at James Sprunt Technical College; Miss Gasometha Hueston. R.N. and flight attendant. It was a gratifying ex perience for both students and teachers to' find the many factors unraveled bv the contributions as they related fit the constitution and the Black American. It svas further brought into focus a new lesson for stu dents and teachers since many had no previous know ledge ot Black contributions to American history. A stimulation ot high motivation prompted main students to express an in terest in putting more em phasis on Black history in the curriculum, according to Mrs. Williams.
