GUARDIAN CARE ROCK-NROLL KING AND QUEEN Residents of the Kenansville Guardian Care Home raised $338 for the American Heart Association. The residents rocked in rocking chairs and rolled in wheelchairs to raise the funds from pledges by area businesses. Residents of the home crowned the two oldest, of the 14 participants. The first town hall was built in 1937 and a second in 1975. The Calypso city govern ment moved into the first home of its own during May of 1937. The town hall was constructed with Work Pro gress Administration funds. The building provided an office and meeting room and two steel jails. May 13th. 1937 issues of THE DUPLIN TIMES report. The one-story brick town hall cost $1,500 for materials and WPA laborers were local citizens. The building was dedicated by Calypso Mayor E.B. Cameron and Town Com missioners J.D. O'Sutton, H.L. Taylor. J.S. Sellars, B.E. Minshew and Albert Kelley. The town commissioners were not satisfied with the 1937 home and moved during IIIC laic I7TV/3. lilt IVIWII government moved into what had been Oscar Walker's store and moved again later during the early 1950s. The Walker store building was given to the Calypso fire department and the town government offices moved in the old post office. The town hall remained in the old post office building until 1975 when the second new struc ture was completed. The 1975 town hall was con structed with the use of federal revenue sharing funds. The project cost $17,000 and provided a town hall with office space and a meeting room for Calypso commissioners. Calypso is presently gear ing up for its 70th birthday celebration. Calypso plans an open house at the town hall Marrfh 6 to display the original Calypso town charter from 2-4 p.m. Along with the charter, other historical items will be displayed. The visitors will be greeted by town officials and served refreshments during the open house.
