Lester Moore Receives Certificate Of Appreciation Lester Moore, project di rector of the Duplin County Work Experience program of Rose Hill has been awarded a certificate of appreciation as an outstanding North Caro linian signed by Gov. James B. Hunt for his work in the N.C. Employm"!!) and Train ' ing Council. Moore received the certificate from Natural Resources and Community Development deputy secre tary Jim Summers at the last meeting of the council on Feb. 18 at the Jane S. McKimmon Center of the North Carolina State Uni versity in Raleigh. Moore was cited for "sig nificant contributions to the progress of North Carolina for exemplary service to the citizens of his community and state" by the Governor. The Employment and Training Council, authorized under the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA). provided over sight to statewide employ ment and training programs designated to provide train ing and employment oppor tunities to the state's unem ployed. underemployed and disadvantaged citizens. It was composed of represen tatives from business and labor, state agencies, edu cational institutions, employ ment and training organiza tions, local governments and special interest groups charged with advising the Governor on employment and training policies and programs. A new council will be appointed by Hunt early next month to administer the Job Training Partnership Act, which will become effective Oct. 1, replacing CETA. Make Scouting Part Of Youth Program Tuscarora Council The Scouting program is designed to build desirable qualities of character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship and to develop personal fitness. The Boy Scouts of America makes this program available to existing groups having compatible goals, including religious, educational, tivic. fraternal, business, labor and governmental bodies. Scouting helps these groups achieve their objective in service or ministry to voufh. Father-Daughter Day At Peace College The fathers of 147 Peace College students gathered on campus for Father-Daughter Day on the weekend of Feb. 12. Fathers and daughters participating in the annual event included Warsaw aTea residents Alfred L. Smith of Warsaw and daughter Kelly; and Walter C. Mangum of Faison and daughter. Eliza beth. Activities included a Peace College Giants basketball game, a skit performance by Peace sophomores, a buffet dinner and a dance. Father-Daughter Day is sponsored by the Peace Stu dent Government Associa tion. Peace College is a two year women's college offer ing associate degrees in liberal ans. music and busi ness. The 110-year-old col lege is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. U.S. Giddensville Fox Hunt March 12 The annual Giddensville Fox Hunt will be held on Saturday. March 12. Break fast and lunch will be served at the Piney Grove Fire Department. Lunch will con sist of barbecued chicken or pork and will sell for S3 a plate. The fire department is located in the Giddensville community on RPR 1725 approximately four miles south of Faison between Hwy. #50 and #403. Fox hunters and those who like good food are invited to attend. Proceeds will help pay for the fire department and purchase needed equip ment. Breakfast will be served from 5-9 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Completes Basic Training Pvt. Rosemary Cooper, daughter of Rosetta Pearsall of Kenansville. completed basic training in Fort Jack son. S.C.. where she quali fied as expert with the M-lb rifle and hand grenade. She was awarded a certificate for superior performance while there. She is now stationed at Fort Gordon. Ga. where she began advanced individual training in military occupa tional specialty. Cooper is a 1982 graduate of James Kenan High School. Pruning Demonstration According to Philip J. Denlinger. assistant Agricul tural Extension agent, there will be a pruning demon stration on ornamental trees and shrubs on Friday. March 11 at the Extension office in Kenansville. It will begin at 2 p.m. in the auditorium and will include a slide pre sentation followed by the domonstration of some of the plants around the office building. Some of the plants in cluded in the demonstration will be various hollies, crepe myrtle, pyracaritha, Japa nese mapel. dogwood and podocarpus. This program is presented by the AES and should be informative as well as enter taining. 4 The Canadian Falls of Ni agara has carved out a "plunge basin" over 180 feet deep. i \ r I i THANKS The Magnolia Fire De partment would like to thank the many people who helped make their benefit Saturday a big success.
