Holy Week Services
In these days when so
many negative news items
are emerging under the
headlines of religion, it is
Inspiring to take notice of an
upcoming endeavor in our
area which is purely re
"ligious, spiritually enriching,
rpnselfish in intent, and co
operative in nature.
,- The endeavor is a co
operative ministry project of
four churches in the Calypso
and Beautancus communities
"which began over a year ago.
Four young ministers who
serve as pastors of Bear
-?Marsh Baptist, Calvpso Bap
tist. Calypso Presbyterian
and Stanford Presbyterian
led their respective churches
to participate in a pioneer
series of worship services
during Holy Week 1982.
"It was an experiment last
year," Mitchell Rivenbark,
pastor of BMBC said. "I
didn't know how my col
leagues would respond when
1 first initiated the idea last
year. We built the coopera
tive church services around
the common denominator we
have, regardless of denomi
nation. which is, of course,
the cross, and upon a founda
tion of close friendship we
share as pastors."
Rivenbark continued. "We
planned the services not
knowing how the churches
would respond, but the
churches were enriched by
Jhe worship and the fellow
ship as was the entire com
munity."
! This year's services, set
for March 29 through April 1
at 7:30 each evening, will be
even more enriching than

last year. Tuesday night's
service will be held Stanford
Presbyterian Church with
Greg Thornton, pastor and
the adult choir of Calypso
Baptist leading in the wor
ship. A special feature of the
evening will be a special
first-time musical presenta
tion by The Four Church
Men's Chorus.
Wednesday's service will
originate at Calypso Presby
terian with Mitchell Riven
bark and the sanctuary choir
of Bear Marsh leading in the
services. The pastoral ser
mon to be delivered that
evening is entitled "The
Ways We Crucify Our Lord."
The four churches will
celebrate Maundy Thursday
at Calvpso Baptist Church
with Eleanor Alexander and
the adult choir from Stanford
leading in the service. The
traditional Holy Communion
will be served by pastors,
elders and deacons from all
four churches.
The Good Friday service
will be at Bear Marsh Baptist
Church. Lewis Gallaway and
the Calypso Presbyterian
adult choir will lead in this
beautiful candlelight service
mourning the crucifixion and
death of Christ.
Kivenbark added, "On
behalf of the four churches,
let me extend a cordial
invitation to the entire com
munity to attend and be
involved in something that is
positive, constructive and in
spirational ? the Holy Week
Services for 1983. Our theme
is more than a slogan; it is
our conviction; "'Four
Churches Around the Cross."
