NC 28349 MAY 19. 1983 DUPLIN COUNTY was well represented at the meeting of the North Carolina League of Municipalities last week when they met in Raleigh. The league sponsored a reception for their legislators on Thursday. Present are: J. ALuther Powell, Wallace commissioner; Ruby Ramsey, mayor of Teachey; Lualda Brinkley, town clerk, Teachey; Arnold Duncan, Wallace commissioner; Robert Hyatt, manager, Wallace; Melvin Pope, mayor of Magnolia; Sam Godwin, mayor of Warsaw; Dcnald Suttles. mayor of Kenansville; Melvin Cording, mayor of Wallace; and Representative Wendell H. Murphy. I _ Depot Gets Reprieve K 'X IfO ? 1 r Magnolia's town board voted to leave the depot as is ^ until its present land lease expires in December, '.'he town leases the land the depot sits on from the railroad company for $100 a year. It also has a million dollar liability insurance policy in force that costs $136. It. too. expires in December. Melba Laney, of the De partment of Natural Re sources and Community De velopment. will pursue possible funding sources to ??>v inv utpm muvvu irom railroad property. The doors and windows facing the railroad tracks must be boarded up and the rock and dirt wall on the railroad side must be removed. In other action by the board. Mary Ann Harrell asked for and deceived a deduction on her water bill for the month of April due to a leak. The board voted to deduct $44 from the sewer bill. The board decided to delay action on the Gilbert Aponte Jr. property taxes Pink Hill May Board Meeting Doris Dunn, manager of the Keg, appeared before the town board of Pink Hill stating that she was in the process of buying the busi ness and was requesting a license in her name to operate the establishment. Action was postponed until a public hearing can be held at f the June meeting. ^ Representatives from the Gruman Company explained their package deal for a new fire truck. The firm is of fering a $64,038 truck with a down payment of $6,403.80 and 7'/i% financing for 10 years. No contracts have been signed at this time for a new fire truck. Town commissioner Manley Hatch announced that gutters needed installa tion and some stumps needed removal at the new Medical Center site. Additional bids are to be secured for the stump re moval before any action is taken. Town policeman Lester Turner reported 4 DUls, one careless and reckless driving, and two wrecks dur ing the month of April. In conclusion, a discussion of the new budget was discussed. John Smith, C.P.A. received the bid on the town auditing for the new vear. SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS at B.F. Grady School prepare the set for the production "Sago of Dead Dog Gulch, which will be presented at 7:45 May 18 and 19 in the school auditorium. Admission will be S2 for adults and $1 for children 13 and under. Chanter Initiated Into Honor Society Tammy Jo Smith Quinn Mrs. Tammy Jo Smith Quinn was initiated into the honor society of Phi Kappa ^^hi at East Carolina Uni ^R-ersity, Greenville. To become a member, a student has to be in the upper 10 percent of a graduating class. Mrs. Quinn was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau, Beta Nu chapter, honor society of nursing at ECU School of Nursing. She has a grade point average of 4.0 ?and has done outstanding Vcommunity services. She was graduated from East Duplin High School. She is residing in Greenville with her hus band. James Mercer Quinn. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Eugene Smith of Albertson and the daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Mercer Quinn of Warsaw. Grady 4th Graders Love County Seat Mrs. Herring's and Mrs. Martin's 4th graders at B.F. Grady School toured Liberty Hall, the Duplin County Sheriff's office. Ryder, Sue Neil Lentz and Fannie McGowan. They all enjoyed a reunion Thursday at Mrs. McGowan's when they were joined by another sister, Lou Nell Byrd of Lenoir and their brother, Kedar Bryan and his wife of Wilmington. Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Jones recently visited the Stephen Gooding Jr. family in Macon, Ga. and Dr. and Mrs. Stephena Gooding and family in Greer, S.C. They were accompanied on the trip by their son, Steve Jones of Wilmnington. Mrs. Belle Stallings of Wallace spent several days here last week with her sister, Mrs. Thomas Hughes. They had supper in Turkey on Wednesday night with their brother, Johnny Blanton and his wife. They were accompanied by Mrs. Ben Williamson. The Woody Oakleys of Beaufort, S.C. spent last weekend here with his parents, the Francis Oakleys. The Gene Jacksons of Raleigh spent last weekend with the Woodrow Brinsons. Mrs. Woodrow Brinson spent several days recently in Trenton with her sister, Mrs. Julia Harriett. Mrs. Willard Johnson and grandson, Stuart, spent the weekend with relatives in Wilmington. Martha Swann spent Thursday in Durham and visited her grandson at Tammy Lynn Center in Raleigh. She lunched with her daughters. Penny Tart and Stephanie English while there.
