DUPLIN COUNTY STUDENTS RECEIVE MOC COLLEGE AWARDS - Jean Hall of Wallace, kit, and Frankie Whaley of Kcnansville. right, were the recipients of humanities awards at the recent Mount Olive College awards banquet. Jean, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Hall Jr. was awarded the Art Scholarship Award for maintaining the highest average during two years of study in art. Frankie. the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lemmie Franklin Whaley Jr., received the Cora Lee Spivey Music Award. He was selected by the music faculty on the basis of ability and accomplishments in music. Kenansville News I DUPLIN DUf L1CATE BRIDGE CLUB The Duplin Duplicate Bridge Club played a five table Howell movement May 12 with Doug Clark as the non-playing director. The winners were: First - Vashti Taylor of Kinston and Doug Hunter of Beulaville; Second - Shirley Stainback and Walter Rouse, both of Kin ston; Third - Fran Beyer and Kay Autry. both of Kenans villc. The club's quarterly championship game will be played on May 19. The winners of the May 9 morning game were: First - Kay Autry of Kenansville and Lee Allred of Rose Hill; Second - Marie Britt and Eleanor Brown, both of Wal lace; Third - Morris Grady and Pony Quinn. both of Beulaville. All bridge players are in vited to play duplicate bridge at The General Store in Kenansville every Monday morning at 10 a.m. and every Thursday at 7 p.m. Baptist Circles The Cora Stokes Circle of the Women of the local Baptist Church met at three o'clock Monday afternoon with Mrs. Ellis Vestal. Mrs. Cleora Hudson presided and had the opening prayer. The program was presented by Mrs. Vestal), her topic being "Ministering to Foreign Missionaries and their Families." Mrs. Vestal also made the closing prayer, after which she served cherry cheesecake and coffee to those present. She was assisted by Mrs. George Penney. The Ella Cooper Circle met Monday night with Mrs. Amos Brinson. and Mrs. Lauren Sharpe was co-hos tess. The meeting was pre sided over by Mrs. Brinson. who also gave the call to prayer. Mrs. Sharpe had charge of the program and discussed "Mark. Maturing of Commitment." During the social hour the hostesses served strawberry cake and coffee to the eight ladies present. Presbyterian Women Circle #1 of the Women of Grove Presbyterian Church met Monday afternoon in the fellowship hall of the church for its regular monthly meeting. Miss Annie Catherine Rhodes presided. After singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" with Louise Boney at the I piano. The Rev. David I Dickey made the opening ; prayer. The Bible study from ? Coliossians was moderated by Mrs. Amos Chestnutt ; with all present taking part. ; After the closing prayer by ? Mrs. Ralph Barwick. the ? group went to The General J Store where they were J served fresh strawberries ? with coffee or tea as guests of J Mrs. Barwick. ft J Circle #2 met that night ? with Mrs. Ralph Brown, who also presided and made the opening praver. Mrs. Troy D. Mollis moderated the Bible study and made the closing prayer. For refresh ments, Mrs. Brown served strawberry shortcake and salted peanuts to the nine members and two visitors present. She was assisted by Mrs. Bob Jones. United Methodist Women The afternoon circle of the Kenansville United Metho dist Women met Monday afternoon with Mrs. E.S. McGowan. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. Viola W. Quinn and Mrs. W.M. Ingram made the opening prayer. The program was a continuation of the Bible study of Isaiah and was in charge of Mrs. Walter Smith. The Closing prayer was made by Mrs. Myrtle K. Quinn. after which the hostess served strawberry shortcake and toasted pecans to the eight ladies present. The evening circle met that night with Mrs. Henry Guy. The opening prayer was made by Mrs. Dixon Hall, who also presided and had the program on "Many Kinds of Parents." During the social hour which fol lowed. Mrs. Guy served strawberry shortcake and coffee to the six ladies present. Eastern Star Gloria Brown, worthy matron, and Gene Brown, worthy patron, were in their respective stations Tuesday night when the Kenansville Chapter #215, Order of the Eastern Star, met for its regular bi-monthly meeting. After the ritualistic opening and business session. The worthy matron previewed the new yearbooks and also pre sented a short Mother's Day program. The next stated meeting will be on Mav 24. Homemakers Club Mrs. J.B. Stroud was hostess for the South Kenansville Extension Homemakers Club Friday afternoon. Mrs. Milton Rice, president, presided over the meeting. "The Old North State" was used for the opening song with Louise W. Mitchell at the piano. Mrs. Stroud conducted the devo tional using Genesis. Chapter 1. stressing verse 3. "Let there be Light." fol lowed by prayer of thanks giving for God's wonderful creation. She also presented the program on "Slim dres sing." After closing with the Clubwoman's Collect, the hostess, assisted by her granddaughter. Jennifer Stroud, served strawberry shortcake and coffee to the eight present.
