Duplin Personalities Dr ^,ak Taylor, D.V.M. The typical day for Dr. Frank Taylor. D.V.M. of Faison. includes an early morning delivery of a calf, setting a broken bone in the leg of a dog. and the re mainder of the day is filled with routine examinations and vaccinations of small animals. Taylor, a native of Duplin and a small farm in the Faison area, has practiced veterinarian medicine in his hometown since 1960. Last fall Taylor branched his practice and opened a second office in the Warsaw area. An average day will bring visits by about 20 clients, Taylor said. Today, Taylor pointed out, his practice has changed from work with farm livestock to more than 70 percent work with small ani mals. When his practiced opened in 1960, Taylor worked a great deal with swine and cattle. "I get great pleasure when something I can do helps an animal," Dr. Taylor, D.V.M. said. "But, I also get very sad when I can't help. Espe cially in the past few years. I have begun to lose many of the patients that had been with me since I started practice." Veterinarian medicine, like other types of medicine, have become oriented toward preventive measures, Taylor said. Vac-' cinations and routine check ups for small animals help guard against the more serious illnesses. After graduation from North Carolina State Univer sity in Raleigh, Taylor served in the Armv Quartermaster Corps. He finished a two year enlistment with the Corps and applied through NCSU to attend veterinarian school. Twelve students from North Carolina were selected to attend veterinarian school each year; Taylor was ac cepted at the Univtrsity of Georgia at Athens. "1 started college with the intention of going to veter inarian school," Taylor said. "But, I became discouraged thinking a boy from such a small town as Faison could never be one of 12 students selected to attend vet school. But, in my junior year, -I realized some of my friends were being selected and found the confidence to later apply. And, I found my farm background helped. Some of the students selected were from livestock backgrounds, people who were most likely to be happy returning to the rural community." Along with the field crops, The Taylor farm included about 100 beef cattle, a medium -sized hog operation and the usual yard animals. "I attribute most of my desire to become a veterin arian to my mother and the animals we cared for on the farm," Taylor said. "My mother would look out over the many hogs and cows and never see the healthy ones, so she would always have me catch the sickly ones and we would handfeed that runty pig or calf. And, later that was how I made most of my spare money as a boy. My dad would give me the runts, the animals that needed just a little special attention to survive, and I would raise and sell them." Money from the sale of Taylor's animals later helped finance his marriage to Faison native Ann Stroud. The Taylors how have two children, Donna, a senior at North Duplin, and Amanda, a North Duplin Junior High School student. Ann Taylor is employed at North Duplin High School as the chorus instructor. "The variety of my work helps make the job a pleasure." Taylor said. "1 never do the same thing over and over again and I never have a routine day." Taylor is one of two licensed doctors of veterinarian science in Duplin County. Legal Notice NORTH CAROLINA DUPLIN COUNTY Fil?
