School Softball team lost two
games last week. May 9 in
Kenansville the lady tigers
fell 3-9 to Wallace-Rose Hill
and May 12 to South Lenoir
at Deep Run, 2-6.

The lady tigers scored one
run in the fourth inning to
Wallace-Rose Hill's two. The
bulldogs scored one run in
the fifth and held the tigers
in that inning. The tigers
added one run in the sixth
and one in the seventh for
their game total of 3. W-RH
batted in three runs in the
sixth and three more in the
seventh inning to finish the
game with a 90-3 victory over
James Kenan.
Gladys Smith led the tigers
batting game with two hits,

innings of play. Coming to
bat in the sixth inning, with a
one-run lead, the ladies from
South Lenoir scored three
runs to take a 6-2 victory over
the tigers at Deep Run.
Carla Quinn and Gladys
Smith led the tigers batting
game with two hits, three
times at the plate. Julie
Carlton and Denise
Kornegay batted .500 in the
game with South Lenoir.

Wesley Boykin Receives PhD
On May 22. Wesley Leo
pold Boykin will receive the
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
degree from the University of
Wisconsin at the Milwaukee
Arena in Wisconsin. A native
of Route 2. Warsaw. Wesley
is the son of the late Maude
and Willie Boykin.
Wesley Leopold Bovkin
Dr. Boykin is the youngest
student ever to receive the
Ph.D in the urban educa
tioonal doctoral program at
the University. His major
department was educational
psychology and his minor
i departments were urban af
fairs and social welfare,
where his area of concen
tration was research
methodology, evaluation and
statistical analysis. His dis
sertation, entitled "Student
Retention and Attrition at an
Urban University," is dedi
cated to his mother, Mrs.
Maude Odessa Hickman
Boykin, who only saw the
first three (unrevised) chap
ters of this book.
Wesley is a 1975 honor
graduate of James Kenan
High School in Warsaw. He
graduated Magna Cum
Laude (with high honor) from
North Carolina A A T State
University in December 1978
and received the master of
science'degree in educational
psychology (human learning
and development) in May
1960 His Ust of collejgiate
honors and awards are nu
merous. Some of these are
the National Deal's list.
Who's Who Among Students
in American Universities,
and Outstanding Young Men
of America-1982. Wesley has
been the recipient of several
scholarships and fellowships
throughout his college
career.

tions. Dr. Bovkin is a
member of the following

Dr. Boykin contends that
his success if greatly due to
the sound education he re
ceived in the Duplin County
public schools, particularly
his excellent start at the
former Douglass High
School. He mentions the

Harriet B. Austin. Suedell
Hill. Esther Suggs Durham.
Honoree Butler. Mrs. Brown
(his 12th grade English

mentor).
Dr. Boykin has accepted a
post-doctoral appointment in
the department of epide
miology in the school of
public health at the Univer
sity of North Carolina in
Chapel Hill, which will begin
in August 1983.
His sister. Jeanette of -
Warsaw, and his brother and
sister-in-law, Lenon and
Patricia of New York City will
attend the commencement
exercises in Milwaukee.
