Duplin Personalities Mw?f umimmmnj \nmti f tiiiiii>y Rich Bovd The citizens of Kenansville are fortunate, said feich Boyd, special historical con' sultant for Liberty Hall, be cause the community shares a desire to preserve its past. Boyd, former general manager and producting director of the outdoor drama THE LIBERTY CART in Kenansville, works indepen dently as a consultant in the arts and history from his home state of Tennessee. Within Duplin County, Boyd works as consultant for Liberty Hall and is project manager of the restoration of the Kelly-Farrior house. In Nashville, where Boyd re sides, he is presently involved with the plans of a country music theme park called music city snowpiace. "I like doing consulting work," Rich Boyd said. "As a consultant I get to do a lot of things that interest me and sometimes there just isn't enough time to do everything I would like to do." Boyd is a native of Murfreesboro, Tenn. He graduated from Belmont College in Nashville with a degree in education. Returning to his hometown, Boyd taught high school five years while attending the University of Middle Ten nessee. doing graduate work in education. Boyd left his speech and drama classroom to join the Tennessee Arts Commission as an adminis trative assistant. After three years, Boyd joined the staff of the tourist park, Rose Carans Centre, where he helped develop an outdoor drama, "Sing Me No Sad Songs." He left the Centre and came to Duplin County to manage the outdoor drama THE LIBERTY CART in 1978. "My second year at THE LIBERTY CART there were things I wanted to do within the show and I felt 1 had the expertise to do them, so I assumed the position of pro ducing director," Boyd said. Boyd came to the outdoor drama in 1978 and remained four seasons. While working at THE LIBERTY CART he undertook projects at Liberty Hall. "I don't consider Liberty Hall or the outdoor drama a memorial to the Kenan family," Boyd said. "If there is such a thing as a me morial, then maybe it is what beauty one person has created to be shared with other people. Liberty Hall shouldn't be viewed as a memorial but as a source of pride within the community. The house and grounds are a living restoration of a way of life, not a memorial. "I think God gave me a talent and if I don't use it, then I am convinced it will dry up. And. it is a challenge to do research and then try to find the artifacts needed to make each historical house as authentic as possible. All my life I have had andnterest in antiques and history ? I've just been very curious about the past. Sometimes 1 think I was born in the wrong time and should have been alive during the 18th cen tury," Boyd said. He began working with Liberty Hall during Christmas, decorat ing the old plantation home with live greenery and fruit. Today 10 support buildings have been added to the grounds of Liberty Hall with Boyd acting as special con sultant for the project. "I am really proud I came to Kenansville," Boyd said. "And, it is good to be able to come back and know the local people welcome me and want me to contribute to the historical restoration of Kenansville even though 1 no longer live in the area. "The first thing I do when 1 return to Kenansville is ride through town and look at Liberty Hall and The Graham House Inn. I take special pride in them," Boyd said. Boyd was among the Kenansville citizens who purchased the historic Graham House for use as a restaurant. Lock Changing A Will It may become costly to change a will just for the sake of change, but there are many times when changing a will may become necessary. For example, your family situation might change. There may be new family members whom you would like to share in your estate or some of the heirs named in your will may died before you do. So, in the case of marriage, divorce or death of a spouse, a will should be updated. In addition, your financial situation may change. If the types and amount of property you owned when your will was written have changed, you may want to change the plan for distribution. Or your ideas may change and you may want to dis tribute your property differ ently for personal reasons. One more thought ? if you happen to move to another state, your old will may not be in compliance with state laws of your new home. Teens and Goofing Off You might think goofing off is purposeless, counter productive and dumb. But, surprisingly enough, goofing off caxbe quite healthy for a tec-^r. . Oooting ott gives teens a chance to interact, to know each other, to find friends, to test out ideas, to compare themselves with others, to gain social skills and to find out who they are and what they are really like. In other words, goofing off can be a serious part of growing up. Another reason some teens goof off is to try and define their place within the group. By goofing off they may gain some status or importance within a larger group. They may establish a place for themselves. And, goofing off can be a way of building a feeling of group solidarity ? of "we-ness." Now if all this teenage goofing off gets under your skin as a parent or leader, try to find ways to help teens channel some of that energy into productive ventures. Find things that will get all i kids involved and make sure that each person knows his contribution is appreciated and that he is special. And, try to arrange for teens to talk, to visit, to share and to plan. Last, but not least, you might take comfort in know ing that goofing off is a passing phase for most teens, h won't last forever. lear, Doth ot Pink Hill, Baxter D. Barbee of Rich lands, Mary J.
