The Albertson Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is very proud of "The Big Four," as they call them. They are the four fine young men who are serving mis'sions for the church. These dedicated young men have chosen to give 18 months of their life in the service of teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. These special young men are serving in various parts of the world. Elder Jesse Deaver is in the Utah. Salt Lake City Mission. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvis Deaver of Deep Run. Elder Kyle Harper is in the Belgium, Brussells Mission. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walton Harper of Albertson. Elder Grant Jones is in the California, Sacramento Mission. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Jones of Beulaville. Elder Andy Keith Barnette is in the California, Oakland Mission. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barnette of Albertson. Elder Kevin Potter was released May 28th after serving a successful mission in Vancouver, Canada. He is the son of the late Melvin Potter and of Mrs. Clyde Patten Shumway of Arizona. There are two more young men who are preparing to leave within the next four months. The Albertson Ward is truly proud of these young men and appreciate the great dedication and sacrifice they are giving in behalf of shar ing the Gospel with their fellowmen. Top Honors Joe Clay Jones Jr. of Burgaw was the recipient recently of the Johnson business award at Mount Olive college. The award is presented annually to the student who has shown the greatest promise of profi ciency in the field of busi ness. Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Clay Jones Sr. of Burgaw, is a 1981 graduate of Pender High School. At Mount Olive, he was a recipient of a Presidential scholarship, a member of the Trojan basketball team, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Next year he will enroll at Campbell University at Buies Creek, where he plans to major in business administration. Jones is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny West brook Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Jones, both of Pink Hill. Lawrence and Dianne Maready and Scottie CHURCH DEDICATION The First Baptist Church of Pink Hill will be dedicating their new building at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 5. The service will include a short dedication service and a song service. The service will con clude at 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend. The building is located at the corner of Stroud Road and the Potter's Hill Hwy. YOUTH RETREAT Mount Zion Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church will be having youth retreat to begin June 3 at 6 p.m. and ending June 4 at 11 a.m. with an overnight stay. Elizabeth Lee. on May 16, 1983. at Duplin General Hospital. Mrs. Albertson is the former Molly Elizabeth Lee. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Goettee of Raleigh announce the birth of a son. Matthew Wesley, on May 23. 1983, at Wake Memorial Hospital in Raleigh. Mrs. Goettee is the former Eleanor Hill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Whitford Hill of Raleigh formerly of Pink Hill. LUTHER LEDFORD. left. First Citizen's banker, was arrested recently by Pink Hill Police Chief, Lester Turner. Ledford was taken to a jail cell in Vernon Park Mall in an all-out effort to raise money for the Lenoir County Cancer Crusade by participating in the charity JAIL-A-Thon. CONGRATULATIONS go to Grace Newberne of Route 2, Pink Hill, who recently won a handmade quilt in a raffle sponsored by the Sarecta Volunteer Fire Department. The quilt was made by the ladies of the Sarecta community. The fire department would like to thank everyone for their kind contributions that helped make the supper and raffle a true success. Photography Competition Recently the Duplin County Arts Council spon sored its first photography competition at the Wallace Springfest. Black and white as well as color works were accepted and judged by Mark Patus. commercial art instructor at James Sprunt Technical College, and by Nelson Best, media spe cialist, also at JSTC. The works were exhibited throughout the day at the Wallace Recreation Center. Winners and their prizes are: First - Bill Futch of Chinquapin - $50. Second - Mitchell A. Perguson of Wallace - $25: and Third - Sharon C. Moore of Wallace - $15. Honorable Mentions - Roy L: Simpson of Mount Olive, Frank Grubbs of Chinquapin. Mitchell A. Perguson of Wallace, Clayton Herring Jr. of Rose Hill and Chris Spell of War saw, all receiving $5. Because of the high in terest expressed in such an event, the Duplin County Arts Council is investigating the possibility of another such competition in the fall. Takes Part In Writing Competition Benjamin D. Wallace, 9. of Route 1, Albert son, parti cipated in Christian Writing competition at Mount Olive College on May 14. This event was part of the State Youth Convention of the Free Will Baptist churches. Benji had previously won first place in the AFC group at the Eastern District Youth Con vention held at Christian Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. At Mount Olive, he came away with second place honors in State competition which entitles him to a half-week expense-paid trip to Cragmont Youth Camp M In. this summer. Benji is a member of Snow Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Route 2, Mount Olive, and is active in Sunday School, AFC and Sunbeams. Benji is completing the third grade at B.F. Grady. His hobbies include swimming and playing baseball. He is the son of Edwina T. Davenport and the late Bobby Wallace. All friends and relatives are invited to attend. ? 0% W m m icoyai rcangers row wow Commanders In Attendance lT?e annual district Royal Rangers Pow Wow was held in the Pink Hill area during the weekend with some 100 boys and 27 commanders attending. The three districts represented'were Cape Fear. New River and Bladen Lakes. Seven different churches were in attendance. John ^ Raynor of Elizabethtown J served as denominational commander. The Royal Rangers is a Christian boys outreach ministry involving boys from the age of 5 to 17 years. The purpose of the organization is to reach, teach and keep.
