-^r-v Along mm. tho Way l?? liwlly Klllttfg KenansviHe is one of the lucky towns with ? strong knowledge of its history and 17 registered landmarks as evidence of the past. Many people live in Duplin County and never know more than what happens in their lifetime. But, to understand today's traditions and society it helps to know a bit about the ones who have come before us. Even though we have no way of talking per sonally with the founding generation of Duplin County, they did leave records and statements in the longstand ing craftsmanship of their homes and meeting halls. Kenansville had 18 sites listed on the National His toric Register. One of the sites, the Pearsall home, was severely damaged by fire in 1981. Most of the homes are built in the Creek Revival style, but the Brown Jones Home is of a Federal style, and the Dr. Graham House is of the Italianate Revival ar chitecture. Our Dupi.n County Courthouse is built in the Neo-Classic Revival. The remaining sites, the Kelly Farrior House, Liberty Hall, Isaac Kelly, Dr. David Gil lespie, Dr. James Blount. Hinson, Stanford, Aber nathy-Wallace, Grimes, the old Methodist Parsonage, St. John's Lodge, Grove Pres byterian Church, Beasley Law Office, and Kenansville Baptist Church are off the Greek Revival style and built prior to the Civil War during the 1840-1861. a report done \ by the North Carolina De partment of Archives and History reveals. ; One of Kenansville's major institutions was St. John's Lodge which was instituted on June 25, 1791 and located at the old court house near the present Duplin and Sampson bound ary line at Baltic. The Lodge became dormant in 1824 and Warren Lodge #101 was es tablished in Kenansville on December 21, 1831, with many members of the old Lodge. The Warren Lodge functioned until about 1841, but reorganized in 1852 and undertook a campaign to raise funds to construct a female seminary in Kenans ville. The lodge began to raise funds to build a meeting hall in Julyof 1858 and. the construction of the present Lodge was com pleted in 1860. Dedication ceremonies for the Lodge building were held Decem ber 27, 1860. Upon outbreak of the Civil War in March of 1865. the lodge invested all its funds in Confederate bonds. The lodge functioned until 1872 when Warren Lodge became dormant. The name Saint John's Lodge #13 was returned to the lodge in January of 1932, though reorganized several times, it still functions using the lodge hall erected in 1860. Kenansville Baptist Church was built on a site given in 1837 by Daniel C. Moore, an original member of the Kenansville Baptist Church. The deed was pre sented to the church about August of 1858, during a time the chapel was being remodeled into its present form. Daniel Moore was principally a farmer and owner of a productive tur pentine still and lumber dealer around 1850. One of the most important institutions established in the Kenansville area was Grove Academy. The school was chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly on December 29, 1785. Wil liam Dickson, a resident of the Grove community, wrote on February 24, 1786 that a lot had been purchased "in the heart of the Presbyterian settlement where our family all live," and a building was then being constructed and expected to be occupied by February 1787. During 1787, Dickson wrote that the academy opened with 25 students. Grove Academy remained in operation until 1907, with only short breaks.
