WINNER WITH 179 BUSHELS. Harold Smith, Jr. of Route 2, Pink Hill, was the winner of the 1982 Duplin County Agricul ture Extension Service corn yield contest. A plaque was presented to Smith, June 16, in Kenansville. The annual contest is spon sored Hv thp Dunlin Countv Agriculture Extension Service and the Duplin Farm Bureau. Pictured left to right. Michael Moore said, farmers may select their best acre of corn and sign-up at the Duplin Extension Service office during harvest time. B.F. Grady Operetta The seventh and eighth graders of B.F. Grady Ele mentary School recently pre sented The Saga of Dead Dog Gulch. The story took place in a Colorado mining town just before the turn of the cen tury. The miners had recent ly sent back East for their ladies who immediately beautified the town by paint ing it in shades of pink, baby blue, and lavender. They even tried to rename the town. Columbine Valley. This turn for the worst led to much arguing and fighting among the entire town. The conflict grew when a band of cowboys rode into town and decided to take over. Through shrewd plan ning, the kids saved the town from the cowboys who de cided to remain in Dead Dog and settle down with the now united town folk. The operetta featured eight musical numbers: "Howdy Folks", "Miners' Bragging Tune", "Ladies of the Beautification Society", "We Just Got in From Abilene", "Miners and Cow boys Should, Be Friends , "Western Lament". "Dead Dog Hoe-Down", and "So Long Folks". The cast of characters were Ladies of the Beautifi cation Society: Karla Korne gay, Susan Waters. Christv Smith, Kim Batchelor, Chandra Branch. Rhonda Hill, Kim Hobbs, Hope JAMIE STROED AND KARLA KORNEGAY, members of the cast presented Mrs. Karla Casteen and Mrs. Janice Gradv. directors with a plaque during assembly on Awards Day. Houston. Valerie Newbern, Tracv Smith, Satina Stewart. Vickie Stroud, and Camille Walton. The miners were played by David Short, Kyete Holmes, Allen Taylor, Thomas Best, Darrell Branch. Greg Jones, Randy Lewis, Keith McKiver, Allen Moore, and Kevin Price. Joe Sheppard, Robert Cannady. Willie Kennon. Bob Outlaw, Johnny Summerlin, Darrell Rouse, and Stephen Garner protrayed the cowboys. The little kids were Bryan Harper, Jean Lee. Ed Lee, Heather Loftin and Tracy Outlaw. The sweet Young Things were Angie Price, Renee Price, Dawn Skinner. Bobbie Jo Lewis. Lori Davis, Melanie Lindsay. Jeanine Nethkin, Daphne Mullins, Justina Parker, Rhonda Taylor and Wendy Tyndall. The town people were Ken neth Thompson. Rudy Jones, Bobby Jordan, and Jamie Stroud who played the lead of Old Josh. The Director for the pro duction was Mrs. Janice Grady; Mrs. Karla Casteen was the Music Director. Assisting Mrs. Casteen with choreography were Mrs. Sheila Potter and the Easv Moving Company. Other members of the crew were scenery: Mr. Clin ton Ayres, Mrs. Mary Avres. Mrs. Janice Gradv, Jr. Jeff Landcn, Tim Carawan, Bryan Harper, Bobbie Jo Lewis and Michelle Taylor. Tim Carawan served as stage crew manager assisted by Hugh Harper. Kirby Harper, and Mike Jones. Mrs. Marie Harper. Mrs. Susan Heath and Mrs. Suzanne Landen were in charge of costumes. Make-up was the responsi bility of Mrs. Janice Grady. Mr. Jeff Landen. Mrs. Joyce Rouse, Mrs. Kay Barton. Mrs. Lynette Hargrove, Mrs. Suzanne Landen and Tim Carawan. The Publicity Committee was Mrs. Susan Heath. Mrs. Joyce Rouse, Mrs. Jackie Herring, Mrs. Suzanne Landen and Byan Harper. Prompters for the musical were Jeff Carawan and Dale Barnett. The admissions were handled by Mr. Wiley Cannady, Mrs. Rachel Hatch, Mrs. Janice Kornegay. Mrs. Vivian Martin. Mrs. Shirley Out law, and Mrs. Kathy Loftin. Mrs. Nellie Davis and Mrs. Rose Jones served on the program committee. Busi nesses who funded the pro grams are Teachey's Super market. Grady Sales and Service. Inc. and Westwater. Inc.. Country Cured Hams, Warsaw. Sponsors for the operetta were B.F. Gradv PTF, Duplin County Arts Council, B.F. Grady Beta Club. B.F. Grady Cultural Arts Committee, American Field Enterprises. East Duplin Vocational Depart ment. and Wallace-Rose Hill High School. Mobile Office To Visit Duplin County Congressman Charlie Whitley's Third District Mobile Office will visit Duplin County on Thursday. June 23. 1983. Mr. Rodney Knowles. the Congressman's field representative, will be manning the office and will be available to persons hav ing matters that they wish brought to the Congress man's attention. Locations and times are as follow; Wallace 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Rockfish Shopping Center; Kenansville 11:00 am to 12:00 noon. Old Kenansville Elementary School; Albertson 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm.
