Education Board Hears Merger Resolution
The Lenoir County Board
of Education received the
County Commissioners' re
solution regarding school
merger on Monday, June 6,
1983, just a few hours prior
to the BOE regular meeting.
Some members of our Board
had not received word of the
resolution when they arrived
for the meeting, said J.
Oliver Smith chairman of the
Lenoir County Board of Edu
cation. The Board heard the
resolution and asked its at
torney for a legal interpreta
tion.
"First, to attempt to set
aside many of the rumors
and misunderstandings that
have been heard by our
personnel at various schools,
we instructed our superin
tendent to bring principals
and the central office staff
together for an explanation
of the resolution." said J.
Oliver Smith, chairman of
Lenoir County BOE. "We
have asked our principals to
meet with their teachers and
to call meetings with the
school Advisory Councils in
order to explain the resolu
tion and find their response
as to what people in the
county are thinking on this
issue. The Lenoir County
Board of Education is an
elected school board and is
responsible to the electorate
who named them: therefore,
we find it most appropriate
that we hold some hearings
before reaching any conclu
sions."
"You mav be assured that
I
the Lenoir County Board of
Education will constantly
assess the feelings of our
people and will be giving
them an opportunity to re
ceive facts and to express
themselves. We urge the
citizens of the county school
district to express their
opinions on this issue to the
county commissioners and to
our legislators. The Board of
Education will be most happs
to hear suggestions from any
of our school citizens."
Smith said.
