a new year has just begun as tar as county and
municipal budgets are concerned. Their years' end June
30 and the new one begins July 1st. In practically all, if not
all, there is some increase in taxes, services, or something VI
expected from the residents. Now, I well know services F'
have to be paid for. To quote an old quote, "There is no j
free lunch, so I have no qualms about increases in i"*"
charges, whatever they may be, so long as it is not a *
boondoggle. However, many of these charges ? water
rate increases, garbage pick-up charges increased, and
that tax increase slapped on everyone by the county ? in
every incident, effeciency is at a low. Fact is in two cases I
am familiar with, efficiency fell even lower after the
increase ? the tax increase by the county and the water
rate increase by the town of Warsaw. . .When you ask an
individual why a certain thing is happening or allowed to
continue, you get an answer like, "Well, that's politics." I
think it is about time the masses ? the ones who have to
pay for these "politics" ? show some of these politicians
what politics is all about on election day.
Everyone is holding their breath hoping for some sort of
success in the attempt to salvage the Watson Poultry
operation. The pouldry business in Duplin County affects
many, many unseen aspects of Duplin life. Watson's
bankruptcy, as disastrous as it is, could be worse. If this
attempt to save it is based on emotions and not good
business, a lot more could be lost.
Speaking of poultry, I am sure everyone has observed
the chicken feathers scattered along the roadsides. This is
begging to be a source of income. A firm in Miami,
Florida, is experimenting with chicken feathers to clean up
oil spills. I am sure you have seen on TV programs birds
who get into the oil spills and are unable to fly, usually
resulting in death to the fowl. . .Well, the feathers have an
uncommon ability to soak up oil. Thus far. the feathers
soak up more oil than any other known process, and they
don't sink. Once the feathers are dumped on or in an oil
spill and do their thing by absorbing the oil, they can then
be run through a wrinoer extracting the oil. and used
again. Of course, the feathers are now thrown away now.
They are used in the processing plants that manufacture
proteiii for chicken feed ? rendering plants. However this
new market may be more lucrative. Anything that will help
the poultry industry will help Duplin County. . .What's
that you say?. . .No, 1 don't think chicken cflitterling
sandwiches will be a good seller.. .Son-of-a-Gun...
