McKay Named Chairman Of Kenansville Bike-A-Thon Mrs. Sheila McKay has been appointed chairman for the annual "Wheels for Life" Bike-A-Thon in Kcnansville to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The event is sche duled for Oct. 8 with a rain date of Oct. 15. St. Jude Children's Re search Hospital is a research treatment-education center where physicians and scien tists Working side by side have actually succeeded in rewriting medical textbooks through painstaking research and treatment advances. This institution. n<*w the largest childhood cancer re search center in America, owes its establishment to a promise made years ago bv entertainer Danny Thomas. His dream became reality when the doors of this non sectarian research hospital opened in l%2 dedicated vilely to the conquest of hopeless diseases of chil dren . When St. Jude accepted its first patient, the survival rate fur children diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leu kemia was less than five percent. Today the disease free survival figure for chil dren in long-term remission has grown to more than 50 percent. Procedures that ori ginated at St. Jttdc are now being used to treat children throughout the U.S. and other parts of the world. St. Jude has treated chil dren from 39 states and 29 foreign countries. Upon re ferral from their physician, they are admitted to a re search study without regard to race, creed, national origin or ability to pay. The sole criterion is a medical deter mination that their disease is under study. Thev receive the very best and latest total medical care because it is through these children that we will learn how to save others. St. Jude Hospital is largely supported by voluntary con tributions which are tax de ductible. Events such as the "Wheels fur Life" bike ride raise the funds tit continue the research and treatment programs which are freely shared with all physicians and research scientists, ex tending the benefits of its work beyond its walls to children throughout the world.
