Carolina Telephone Scholarships James Sprunt Technical College announces the selection of Ruth A. Carlton and Arnold Dunn as reci pients of the newly-estab lished Carolina Telephone scholarship program scholar ships. The two-year scholarship program, established by Carolina Telephone and * Telegraph of Tarboro, pro y vides a total of 52 $500 1 scholarships in 1983-84, and again in 1984-85. JSTC is one , of 26 community colleges in the svstem selected bv CTT to participate in the scholar ship program. Ruth Carlton The program is to p:qvide assistance to 'minority stu dents and workers who have been displaced from their jobs and are retraining for new skills. Ruth Carlton, a Dean's List student, is beginning her second year this quarter in the executive secretary pro gram. She is a resident ot Warsaw. Arnold Dunn is a returning freshman in the college's general education program. He resides in Kenan^ville. Tractor Driving Contest Winners The Future Farmers of America from schools throughout Ouplin County participated in a tractor driving contest on Oct. 4 at the second annual Ouplin Agribusiness Fair. Team winners and scores were? 1st - East Duplin - 566.8; 2nd - Wallace-Rose Hill - 574.2; and third - North Ouplin - 635.2. Individual winners and scores were: 1st - Andy Burchfield - 56.4; 2nd - Jeff King - 58.0; and 3rd - Tony Edge - 76.8 Student participants were: E.E. Smith - Raymond and Ramon Stroud, Jimmy Bar nette and Cecil Harrell. East Ouplin: Tony Westbrook, Zollie Kornegay, Joe Lanier and William Davis Wallace Rose Hill - Andy Burchfield, Tony Edge, Jimmy Batts and Kenneth Cavenaugh. North Ouplin - Ron Cottle, Lyn Sutton, Joey Holmes and Jeff King. FOLK ARTISTS IN BEULAVILLE The folk music group. Big Zucchini Washboard Bandits, appeared at the East Duplin High and Beulaville Elementary schools Oct. 12. The hour-long presentations by the groups illustrated the history of folk music in the United States through the tunes and songs they performed. Instruments used by the group included the bagpipes, harmonica, fiddle, guitar, washboard, autoharp, dobro, drum. jug. banjo, cornet, zobo, mandolin, cornetto and bones. The presentation was sponsored the the Duplin County Arts Council and the Big Zucchini Washboard Bandits are pictured above. The group is based in Chapel Hill. IJSTC Students Listed In Who's Who The 1984 edition of Who'i Who Among' Students> in American Junior Colleges will include the names of 21 students from James Sprunt Technical College who hgve been selected as national outstanding campus leaders. Campus nominating com mittees and editors of the annual directory have in cluded the names of these students based on their aca demic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. MEETING SCHEDULED The Wayne County Home Builders membership meeting will be held Nov. 1 at *1 p.m. at the Regency West (Old Quality Inn) on Hwy. 70 West, Goldsboro. The speaker will be Jeff Young of Goldsboro, whose topic will be Historical Land marks in Goldsboro. COUNTRY STORE AND BARBECUE West Duplin Academy will sponsor a country store and barbecue lunch and supper in Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. until. At 2 p.m. there ivill be gospel sing and at 1:30 an auction with games, Flea market, zoo and re freshments going on all day. Ihere will be a $50 door prize. They join an elite group of students selected from more than 1,500 institutions of higher learning _ in all 50 states, the iJistrirt of Colum bia and several foreign na tions.
