James Kenan Wins East
Central 2-A Championship
WARSAW - Coach Billy
Byrd's James Kenan football
team defeated Lakewood
Friday night at Tiger Field
20-5 to win the East Central
2-A Conference champion
ship with a perfect 8-0
record. It was the third ECC
title for Byrd's Tigers over
the past four years. Byrd put
it this way, "lowe it all to the
coaching staff (John Barrow,
Bill Helton, Mickey Benton,
Tom McMahon and Sherman
Futch) and (he James Kenan
fans."
James Kenan's all-(ime
ground gainer Mickey Faison
pleased the huge homecom
ing crowd with his outstand
ing ability to get the ball in
the end zone. Faison gained
215 yards and scored twice
on runs of 93 and 83 yards to
assure the Tigers of the title.
Faison, the Tigers' all-time
speedy merchant, has gained
1,440 yards and still has
another year at James
Kenan. Another tough
runner for the ECC champs
is fullback Chuck Anderson
with 63 yards against the
Leopards from Roseboro.
James Kenan's stubborn
lead by Derwin Bell, Thomas
Faison, Timmy Moore,
Kelvin Bell, Larry Cooke,
Mitchell Batts and Anthony
Steel did not allow Lakewood
a TD all night.
As Coach Byrd said, "It is
a brand new season going
into the playoffs against
Franklinton. We understand
thev are very quick with two
of the premiere running
backs in the state in 6'3
210-pound eric Allen and
bulldozer fullback Quentin
Cannady, a 185-nound .
blockbuster." Franklinton 1
runs mostly from the I for
mation and they are very (
strone defensively. (The best
way to get to Franklinton is
to go to Smithfield ar.d stay
on Highway 96 to Frank- '
linton, about SO miles from
Smithfield). Good luck,
Tigers.
Wallace-Rose Hill came
from behind Friday night to
defeat Midway 38:22 in an
important ECC game. Wal
lace-Rose Hill's Bulldogs of
Coach Jack Holley, runner
up in the East Central Con
ference with a 7-1 record,
will play at East Carteret
Friday night in the state 2-A
playoffs. Good lurk, Dogs.

So Much Value On Something *
Money Can't Bu>?
A
No one is surprised
these days when a bank
touts the quality of its ser
vices or announces with
pride the addition of another
zero in its assets column.
And certainly, these
* things are important. It's ?
just that, at BB&T, we view
them from a somewhat dif
ferent perspective. Because,
what we value above all
else is something quite dif
ferent. We place a premium
on attitude.
Attitude shows up on 9
the balance sheet only in
directly. But we venture to
say that you'll notice the
difference it makes when
you enter any one of our
branches.
You'll find, for example,
that instead of merely pro- ?
i viding a service, we're inter
I ested in the full range of
i your long-term financial
* plans and needs.
We believe that our
commitment to long-term
thinking gives us superior ^
* insight. And that this insight
gives us the ability to under
stand the need and value of
integrated financial solu
* tions for our customers.
Responsiveness is an
[ other BB&T attribute. We're
committed to responding to 4
any request for our services
in the absolute minimum
amount of time.
Ultimately, you'll also
discover that BB&T delivers
the highest quality financial
services across the board.
Quality. Commitment. * ^
Performance. For the things
that mean more than just
money, come to the place
that's more than a bank.
