Kenansville News Presbyterian Women Meet Circle #1 of the Women of Grove Presbyterian Church met Monday afternoon, Dec. 12, with Mrs. N.B. Boney in Pinecrest Acres. After the opening song, the Rev. DtVid Dickey offered the opening prayer. Miss Annie Catherine Rhodes presided and Mrs. Amos Chestnutt moderated the Bible study. All present took part in the discussion. For refreshments the hostess served individual fruit jcakes, cheese wafers and coffee. Circje #2 met Monday night!with Billie Jo Stroud. TJtf opening prayer was ? g%h "by Mrs. Mary Mullis who also moderated the Bible study. She was assisted by Mesdames Louise W. Mitchell, Elizabeth Smith, Ann Houston and Jill Long. The business session was presided over by Ruth Jones. A social hour followed the meeting, during which time the hostess, assisted by Katie Brown, served cheese ball and crackers, brownies, peanuts and iced drinks to the 11 present. Methodist Circles The afternoon and evening circles of the United Metho dist Women held a joint meeting .on Monday, Dec. 12. They met at the fel lowship hall for a covered dish supper. Delaine Rector welcomed the 18 present and the Rev. James Harris con ducted the opening devo tional and asked the bless ing. Prior to the closing prayer, made by Sally In gram. a love gift offering was taken for the Ashley Quinn fund, which totaled over $100. The members decided to do this instead of ex changing Christmas gifts as they usually do. Baptist Circles The Cora Stokes Circle of the local Baptist Church met Monday, Dec. 12, with Mrs. George Penney. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. Ellis Vestal. The opening prayer was made by Mrs. O.W. Hudson and Mrs. Woodrow Brinson conducted the program. Her topic was "'The Assurance of God's Love and the Power of Prayer." After the closing prayer by Mrs. Vestal, the hostess served fruit jello, cookies and toasted pecans. The Ella Cooper Circle met with Mrs. Bobbie Heath. Mrs. Robert Swain presided. The call to prayer was given by Mrs. E.C. Tyndall, who also had charge of a Christ mas program and gift ex change. She assisted Mrs. Heath in serving all kinds of Christmas goodies with punch to the nine present. Liberty Hall Bridge Club Mrs. Sue Neil Lentz was hostess for the Liberty Hall Bridge Club Wednesday night with Mesdames Ruth Jones and Martha Sitterson as substitutes for the absent members. Between progres sions the hostess served cherry pie, toasted pecans and coffee. Club members high score prize was won by Mrs. Stuart Hall and by Mrs. Sitterson for (he visiting players. Kontract Klub The Kenansville Kontract Klub met Thursday night with Mrs. Mattie W. Barbee. , Mesdames Betty Helton and Martha Sitterson substituted for two absent members. Club high was won by Mrs. George Penney and by Mrs. Sitterson for the visitors. Between progressions the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Stuart Hall, served jello topped with whipped cream accompanied with cheese wafers, fruit cake cookies, toasted pecans and coffee. Eastern Star The regular bi-monthly meeting of Kenansvialle Chapter #215, OES, was held on Tuesday night, Dec. 13, in the Masonic Lodge. Sally Tyndall served as worthy matron due to the absence of that officer. She was assisted by the worthy patron. Gene Brown. After the ritualistic opening and a short business session, a Christmas program was presented hv Louise K. Boney assisted by Celia Stroud, Florence Brown and Ruby Newton. A social hour followed the ritualistic closing. Christmas gifts were exchanged and refreshments consisting of cheese wafers, cheese ball and crackers, assorted Christmas cookies and lime punch were enjoyed. Marian Jeski paid a surprise visit as Santa Claus. Homemakers Club The South Kenansville | Homemakers Club held its ( December meeting in the , home of Mrs. Milton Rice \ Thursday. Six members with four visitors met for a covered-dish supper. Upon their arrival they were served hot spiced punch. Members , present were Mrs. Rice, , Mrs. N.B. Boney, Mrs. Sheldon Swann, Mrs. W.M. Ingram, Mrs. Louise W. Mitchell and Mrs. Troy , Mullis. Visitors included Mr. Rice, Rev. Troy Mullis and Mae and Bill Spicer. Rev. Mullis asked the blessing. After the meal, those Duplin Students Tested Duplin County school offi cans reported 90 percent of county students taking state competency tests in 1983 passed the reading section and 87.3 percent passed the mathematics section. The average for schools in the region that includes Duplin was 92.3 percent passing the reading and 88.8 percent the mathematics sections, the state average was 92.8 percent passing reading and 87.3 percent passing the mathematics sections. Eighty-five Duplin juniors and 33 seniors failed all or ' part of the tests. Birth Announced Mr. and Mrs. David (Tony) Braswell of Beulaville an nounce the birth of their son, Bradley Joe, on December 15, 1983, at Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville. Grandparents are Mrs. Christine Taylor of Beulaville and Mrs. Bessie Braswell of Warsaw. present reassembled in the iving room for the program. After singing led by Louise W. Mitchell, a poem was read by Mrs. Mullis, Followed by prayer. Mrs. Ingram discussed the pro p-am topic for the month, 'How to Put More Time in four Life." Mr. and Mrs. Woody Brinson attended the state laycee Christmas party in \sheboro Saturday night. Louise Boney and Louise Viitchell attended the Battle )f Rockfish DAR luncheon neeting in the Pender bounty Museum in Burgaw Tuesday. Sally Ingram, Louise Boney and Ruth Quinn at ended the UDC meetine in Turkey Wednesday after noon in the home of Mrs. Frances Oliver. Mr. and Mrs. James Wood he three children of Char otte spent Sunday with her narents, Mr. and Mrs. V.H. Reynolds. They were joined jy Mrs. Judy Wynne of Williamston. Mrs. Sue Fisher-Webb of Raleigh has been visiting Vfiss Pattie Loft in.
