Jo* Lanier Son i * g Lately the towns, county, ABC boards and so on have had their audits. It is not always clear just what an audit is. There is an implied meaning or an assumption that everything is ail right if the audit passes, or if the exceptions are few or none. . .Well, this implied meaning is not true. About all an audit does is to say' the bookkeeping is in order. That things are charged to the right account in the books. . .Whether it was charged to the right account when it was bought is another matter. . .This audit does not show if someone bought roofing shingles with town money and put the shingles on his house. . .It does not show that tires bought with town money was put on a personal car. . .It does not show that town or county vehicles are used for personal gain. . .(By the way, a town or county using state permanent license tags cannot give permission, legally, for a vehicle to be used other than on town or county business).. . .This audit does not show if town or county gasoline is being used for personal cars. . .It does not show that deposits were not listed and pocketed. . .So, when you see that your town or county has been cleared by an audit, it is not necessarily so. . .Usually the audit lists things that should be done to prevent these things; however you never hear about this. . Most often these things to prevent thefts of tax payers' property and money is deemed to be a lot of trouble. . .But, right is right, and employees who may be doing these things should be stopped, if not fired, and forced to repay those things he or she used personally... ????? Another year is coming to an end, and a new one is beginning. I hope Son-of-A-Gun has enlightened your past year. . .It was.only possible due to your cooperation. The phone calls, the letters, the personal contacts made the few items looked into possible. There are a lot of things that were not possible. . .In some cases 1 was asked not to indicate who gave me the information, and honoring the request made it impossible to really get into some of the problems. . .But, it has made me aware of the problem and when an opening does appear, I will be better equipped to handle it.. .Other times when I have been told of problems and looked into them, those involved straightened out the problems, and thus 1 saw no need to write about it. . .After all, if the problem is solved, that is what was wanted in the beginning. ?.In Son-of-a-Gun I express opinions, and if H. comes about, if something is changed, you have not, nor will you ever see Son-of-a-Gun brag about it or even mention it again. . .It is hoped Son-of-a-Gun has helped you see the other side of a front page story, or see the story that is not printed. . .1 will continue to try and inform and amuse you during 1984.. .1 hope your New Year will be the best yet.. .Son-of-a-Gun. ...
