ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED - Mr. and Mrs. Cecil O. Whaley of Route 2, Pink Hill, announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter. Mrs. Black - Dr. Holland Wed In Private Ceremony Mrs. Frances Ward Black and Dr. Victor Bradshaw Holland Jr. were married on Christmas Day, December 25, 1983, in a private cere mony at 2:30 p.m. at the home of the bride, 210 North Cannon Boulevard, Kannapolis. The bride, the former Frances Ward of Mount Olive, is the daughter of Mrs. Elmer Goodson and the late Dee Ward. Dr. Holland is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Victor Bradshaw Holland of Norfolk, Virginia. The double ring ceremony was performed by the Reverend James Stanley Bellamy, minister of Trinity United Methodist Church. Musical selections were provided by the bride's sister, Mrs. Avis Goodson Hammond of Greensboro and the bride's daughter, Janet Ward Black of Chapel Hill. Victor Bradshaw Holland III served as best man for his father. Janet Ward Black attended her mother as maid of honor. The bride was attired in a champagne crepe dress with long sleeves and mandarin collar. She carried a bouquet of orchids, a gift from Clyde Eugene Crocker Jr, who grew them at his Braftord Farm home in Concord. A retired English teacher with the Concord city schools, the bride serves as chairman of the 400th Anni versary Committee for Cabarrus County, having been appointed by Governor Hunt. She is also regional chairman of the Koanoke Island Historical Society of North Carolina for Cabarrus, Rowan, Anson, Mecklen berg, Stanley, Iredell and Union counties. The groom holds the Master's in chemistry from North Carolina State Uni versity in Raleigh and the PhD in chemistry from Van derbilt. He taught chemistry at NCSU prior to coming to Kannapolis. He currently is director of laboratories for Cannon Mills Company. Family members attending other than those named were the bride's sister, Miss Dotty Goodson of Orange City, Florida; the groom's daughter and son-in-law. A friend of the family, Harry Lee Pence of Chapel Hill was present. The bride's housekeeper, Mrs. John Barrett, served wedding cake and punch following the ceremony. The bride is the niece of Mrs. Mattie Sadler Barbee of Kenansville. Dinner Mrs. Black and Dr. Holland were entertained at dinner Sunday evening in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Whicker Shelton on Dog wood Boulevard. They were assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Victor Bradshaw Holland III. As an honor gift, the couple received the Lennox 1983 Colonial Christmas Wreath Plate "Maryland, the Third Colony," depicting the lands along the Chesapeake chartered by England as our third colony. "Christmas 1983" is the third in a limited edition series of thirteen fine china plates. The plates will be issued annually in the same sequence as the estab lishment of the colonies. Handcrafted in ivorv-tonerl Lenox china and decorated with 24-karat gold, each plate in the series will be produced only during the year of its issue. The menu consisted of chicken breast, rice pilaf, deviled eggs, curried fruit, cherry yum-yum, rolfs, coffee and tea. The groom's grandchil dren, Victor Holland, Holly Shelton and Brad Shelton were present also. Mrs. Black - Dr. Holland Feted Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wall of Williamsburg Road in Concord entertained Mrs. Baxter Black and Dr. Victor Bradshaw Holland Jr. at a dinner party on Friday evening. The bride-elect re ceived a corsage of freezer and D'arbrutus imported from Holland. Guests were seved buffet-style from a table centered with a live tree symbolizing the tree of life. The menu consisted of chicken tetrazini, green beans, corn, hot clam dip, pickled peaches and relish tray. Heavenly hash pie was served for dessert. Home made rolls were made into love knots. The couple received a brass pitcher as an honor gift. In toasting the couple, Rudy Hardy quoted 1st Corinthians 13. Luncheon honors Mrs. Black Mrs. Willis Campbell and Mrs. James Carroll Good man of Concord and Mrs. Charles E. Rimer of Kan napolis entertained Mrs. Baxter Black (Fran) at Geor gio's in Charlotte at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Mrs. Black was presented a white orchid to wear with her beige knit dress. The hostesses gave the bride-elect a crystal pitcher. With Mrs. Black at the luncheon were the groom's daughter, Mrs. Baxter Whicker Shelton and daughter-in-law Mrs. Victor Bradshaw Holland III. i Dinner Mr. and Mrs. William S. Fisher of Burrage Road in Concord entertained Dr. Victor Bradshaw Holland Jr. and Mrs. Baxter Black at a dinner at the Epicurian Res taurant in Charlotte. They received a crystal pitcher as an honor gift. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Hayes.
