Duplin Branch Of NAACP To Join Anniversary Celebration The Duplin County Branch of the NAACP will join the rest of the nation in celebrating its 75th anni versary with a series of commemo rative events in 1984, says Richard Miller, president of the Duplin Branch. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded Feb. 12, 1909 and is to this day the only national civil rights organization with membership in all 50 states. During the 75-year history, the association has worked unremitting ly within the system to achieve equal opportunity and justice for all * citizens. In North Carolina, citizens are urged to recognize the many achievements of the NAACP as a standard bearer for justice and join in its diamond jubilee celebration in 1984. Miller said. On Feb. 12, a birthday rally is scheduled to be held at West Hill Street Baptist Church in Warsaw at 3 p.rti. with the Rev. Dr. Emmett Burns of Baltimore, Md. as guest speaker. Dr. Burns is deputy director of the 8th region with headquarters in Baltimore. The rally will culminate the membership drive for 1984, the official stated. The goals for 1984 are 6,000 on registration books and a membership in the local branch of 2,000. Real Estate Law At JSTC The continuing education depart ment of James Sprunt Technical College will offer a 33-hour course in real estate law beginning Feb. 1. The class will meet each Monday and Wednesday night from 6-9 p.m. This is he second course of a three-part comprehensive real estate broker licensing program and is fully ap proved by the N.C. Real Estate Commission. Persons who wish to obtain their brokers license should have a current real estate salesman license or should have recently completed an approved salesman course. In certain cases, persons who have previously taken broker's courses which no longer meet the commis sion guidelines may take 66 addi tional hours and qualify to sit for the broker's exam. The instructor for the class will be Charles Ingram a lawyer who resides in Warsaw. The course will cost. approximately S28 for textbooks and registration fee. Telephone's Taxes Reflect Large Investment i Street Richardson, Carolina Tele phone's district commercial and marketing manager in Clinton, said that the company's total tax payment within Duplin County, inclding all city taxes, is SI 18,763.01. County and municipal 1983 taxes paid by the company in its 50-county operating area totaled nearly $8 million. "The taxes reflect Carolina Tele phone's extensive investment in buildings and equipment to provide telephone service to some 600,000 customers in Eastern and Piedmont North Carolina,' said Richardson, i Carolina Telephone's total tax bill for 1983, including all state and federal taxes, is expected to come to nearly $75 million. This figure does not include more than $9.5 million in 3 percent federal exise tax payments which were billed in 1983 to tele phone users by the company.
