Direct Line^% ?*syj Until recently, you had to rent your phone from your local telephone company and choices were few. But under deregulation that's all changed, and today you can now buy your phone from a wide range of A suppliers, and choose from a variety ? of styles. That's not to say that everyone has to buy their phone. If you're renting phones now, you can continue to rent or the telephone company will sell them to you as an option. New customers, however, will have to buy their phones,if they don't already own them. That's because the new competitive rules will-no longer let the regulated telephone company ^ offer new additional phones ' for w monthly rental. So, if you're renting phones now, should you buy them? Of course, the decision is up to you. One of the simplest reasons for buying a phone is that it's going to reduce your phone bill immediately. Right now. you are paying the phone company at least $1.25 a month and maybe more to rent a phone. By buying your phone, you could cut out that monthly rental charge forever, and ? your purchase, depending on the style and price, could pay for itself in about a year in savings from rental charges. New phones today cost anywhere ?% ? r from $10 for the lightweight, "throwaway" models to more than $100 for the fancy, "designer" phones. While the phone company is not selling new phones, it will sell you at reasonable prices the phones you now rent. Call your local telephone office for details. Buying your phone is just like any other purchase. You have to shop around, check out prices, service availabilities and warranties. When you own your phone, it is you responsibility to maintain it, so ask about warranties and repair service before you buy. It's a good idea to have at least one standard, well-made and dependable phone in your house. Your rental phones may be a good buy here; they have been made by major manu facturers and usually work well for years. The new inexpensive lightweight phones may not be as reliable or sound as good as standard phones, but they are a good choice for extension phones in rooms where you don't use the phone too often. One more thing. Be sure you nave the proper connectors or adapters to hook up your new phone. In most cases, you simply need to buy your phone and plub it in. If your home does not have modular telephone receptacles for plug-in phones, you can buy a kit to make the conversion. oners GOSPEL SING The Lewis Family, country gospel ? singers, will perform at Pink Hill School gym on Sunday.
