^Commissioners Recognize Outstanding 4-H'ers The annual Duplin County Commissioners' 4-H recognition banquet was held Feb. 8 in Rose Hill with Associate State 4-H Leader Dalton Proctor as the speaker. Special recognition was presented to two junior and two senior members of the Duplin 4-H'ers bv the countv commissioners. Recognized as Outstanding Junior 4-H'ers were Angie Hood, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Hood of Warsaw, and Bryant Murphy, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Murphy of Magnolia. Senior 4-H'ers recognized as outstanding were Amy West, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry West of Warsaw, and Eleanor Wade, the daughter of Elma Boney Wade of Wallace. The second statewide dental contest, with $500 cash awards to the winning schools (two categories: large/small schools), will highlight North Carolina's 1984 Children's Dental Health Month in February. "Let's Get Dental" is the contest theme. Contest sponsors are: the N.C. Dental Society; Dental Health Sec wtion, Division of Health Services, ?N.C. Department of Human Re sources; and the N.C. Department of Pubjic Instruction. According to Dr. Bill Kelly, state chairman, 1984 Children's Dental Health Month committee, school principals have been asked to decide if their schools will participate in the contest. "Awards will be determined based upon the number of points a school earns by completing specific activities during the weeks of Feb. 6-17," Dr. Kelly said. "Points will be awarded to the school for activi ties such as having a dental display in the school library, holding a non sweet snack day, conducting PTA programs related to dental health, etc."care." Dr. Kelly s'ated, "Classroom teachers may add to their school's point total by scheduling dental health activities such as swishing with flouride mouthrinse or asking a dentist to visit and talk to students." Principals may add points to their schools' overall scores by actively participating. Superintendents and . administrators may also give a boost to the winning schools' scores by completing suggested activities. First prize for the winning schools will be state trophies and cash awards of $500. District winners will receive cash awards of $60 and permanent plaques. The cash awards and trophies will be pre sented by the N.C. Dental Society and its local affiliates. "We're asking individual dentists and local dental societies to urge schools in their areas to participate and, whenever possible, offer their assistance with contest activities," Dr. Kelly said. "We want our young people to be constantly aware of the importance of good dental health Care. Driver Killed In Collision A Wilson County man was killed when a tractor-trailer rig jackknifed into the path of his pickup truck in Calypso, 3'/j miles north ot haison, at'8:45a.m. Monday. I "Thomas Ray Batts, 38, of Route 2, Hospital in Goldsboro, Johnson said. Their names were not available. The tractor-trailer driver, Curtis Nail, 40, of Tampa, Fla., was charged with operating left of the center and death by vehicle, Johnson said. died when the tractor-trailer swerved left, crossed the center line and overturned in Batts' lane, State Trooper K.N. Johnson said. Two passengers in Batts' truck were injured in the accident. They were taken to Wayne Memorial Boy Found Dead Near Wallace A two-year-old boy was found dead in a house near Wallace in southern Duplin County early last Friday morning. The Duplin County Sheriff's Department has listed the case as homicide. Jason Lamar Fillyaw's body was found in the bedroom of the house on Calico Bay Road about two miles west of Wallace around 1 a.m., the Sheriff's Department reported. Chief Deputy Glenn Jernigan said the boy's mother, Ingenue Fillyaw, called the Sheriffs Department to report the incident. Jernigan said that the boy's mother was with him in the house, but that the Calico Road house was not where the boy lived. He did not know who lived at the house. Dr. Corbett Quinn, a Duplin County medical examiner, said an autopsy performed Friday in Jack sonville determined the boy died of suffocation. No one has been charged in the case.
