MAGNOLIA SEALING
FATE OF OLD DEPOT
The deteriorating railroad depot at
Magnolia appears to be doomed.
The Town Board is advertising for
bids to move or demolish the
century-old brick structure. The
building once served most of Duplin
County as a depot for the railroads
which became the Atlantic Coast
Line and later Seabord System.
The board hopes to open bids at its
March 13 meeting.
Seaborad System sold the depot to
the town for $600 about four years
ago. Under the terms of the sale, the
company retained title to the land.
The town agreed to build a fence
along the railroad and secure ah
doors and windows on the railroad
side of the building. The town also
would have had to buy liability
insurance if it used the building.
The railroad also retained the right
to order the depot moved or de
molished on 90 days' notice.
The 1 >wn bought a lot about 100
feet away from the railroad right of
way with the idea of moving the
building and opening a museum.
Moving the building would have
cost $20,000 to $40,000, according to
bids received by the town.
