Faircloth To Tour County Lauch Faircloth of Clinton will tour Duplin County Saturday in his campaign for governor. Going to the people and giving them a chance to meet the candidate has gained him voters all over the state. His constant rise in the polls shows that when people talk with Lauch he under stands their problems. Of course Lauch is well-known in Duplin and is referred to by his supporters as "our local candidate." Throughout his life, Faircloth has been successful in helping to build a belter life for the people of North | Carolina. His unique combination of | experience and leadership brings an j understanding to our state which is crucial to being an effective governor of North Carolina. At 20, while running the family farm, he entered politics to help elect Kerr Scott governor. He directed the N.C. Department of Commerce from ' 1977 to July 1983, and was chairman v of the Highway Commission from 1969 to 1973. He was a member of the Highway Commission from 1961 ' to 1964. He has been a close friend and advisor to four governors of the state. While he was Secretary of Com merce, Faircloth's industrial devel opment program helped attract 180,000 jobs throughout North Carolina. That is more good jobs for women, minorities, the underem ployed and unemployed than any other period in our history. At the same time he was involved in public leadership, Lauch erew from a young farmer into a success ful owner and operator of several rarms, agricultural-related compan es and small businesses. As a farmer, he understands the 'ole agriculture plays in our state's :conomy. As a businessman, he inderstands how government can iffect the thin line between profit ind loss. On Saturday, March 24, Faircloth vill be in Faison at 10 a.m., Wallace it ll:lSa.m., and Beulaville at 1:05 p.m. Teachers Sponsor Reception For Gilmore ' The pubJic is invited to attend a reception for Thomas O. Gilmore, democratic candidate for Governor, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 23 at Brown's Restaurant in Kenansville. The reception is being sponsored by the Duplin County chapter of the N.C. Association of Educators ? P.A.C.E. Gilmore, who has made education the major issue of his campaign, was recently endorsed by the 43,000 member statewide teachers organi zation. Saying that the state faced an "educational crisis," Gilmore has called for the Legislature to place the public school budget first. While a legislator, Gilmore sponsored 48 different education bills, including legislation creating a statewide public kindergarten program and reducing the student-teacher ratio. According to Linda Beck, Gilmore's campaign manager for Duplin County, "1116 overwhelming majority of teachers feel that Tom Gilmore will do the best job of providing quality education for all of our children. I invite you to attend this reception and meet the next governor of North Carolina." Thomas 0. Gilmore Jimmy Green Faison Begins Annexation Procedures The Faison Board of Commis sioners authorized the start of annexation procedures for the Win nifred Street extension at the March 7 meeting A denied request for street repairs prompted Faison citizen Jim Saint Amand's request because the street was outside the city limits and not town property. Vinyl siding is in the process of being installed on the Faison Recrea tion Department gymnasium. Rec reation Commission member Roxann Lee appeared before the town board requesting an additional $500 to help finance the installation of the vinyl siding. According to Lee. funds from the recreation budget would finance all but the $500 requested from the town. The total contract with Wayne Home Inprovement, Inc. of Mount Olive to side the gym is $8,450 with $4,500 coming from the 1983-84 recreation budget, $500 from the town, and $3,540 from the 1984-85 recreation budget. A penalty was added for the fadure to purchase town tags by the February 15 deadline. The town license plates ordiance was changed by Commissioners to include a $5 penalty for late purchase and the requirement to display the tags was deleted. M Faison received payment from ~ Univision Cable Television of Rich lands for franchise rights in the town. The check for $475 was three percent of the cable company's gross profits during its operation August through November, 1983. Lt. Gov.
