' Kinston Soap Box Derby I A field of amateur racers will race I down Kinston's North Queen Street l-hill on Saturday. July 7 when the kcinston Derby Racing Association sponsors the Kinston Area Soap Box Derby. Boys and girls from ages 9-15 in eight eastern North Carolina counties are eligible for participa tion. According to director Donald Gaskins, each racer, with the aid of a parent or other adult, will construct a car using a master kit that includes steering, braking and axle systems. ^Bodies for the cars are constructed Pby the racers and the participating adplts. Popular racer shells are made from wood or from ftberglas kits. ; boys and girls ages 9-10 will compete in the Junior Divison. fltirteen to 15 year-olds will race in tbe Senior Division and U-12-vear-olds mav desisnate their choice of division when they register prior to March 31. If at least 10 participant race in a division, the winner will be eligible to compete in the national cham pionship in Akron, Ohio during August. In previous years contestants from Kinston, Pink Hill, LaGrange, Snow Hill, New Bern and Jacksonville have competed. This year the race is open to youth from Lenoir, Wayne, Jones, Craven, Greene, Pitt, Onslow and Duplin counties. The Great Balloon Launch I Wednesday, April 11 at 1:30 p.m. there will be a Great Balloon Launch at Pink Hill School. Attached to each balloon will be a message. It will tell what the student's favorite thing in the media center is. April 11 is School Library Media Dav. After the balloon launch, there will be an open house. All parents and the community are invited to come to Pink Hill School library. Celebrates Anniversary Harold and Violet Stroud of Pink Hill celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary Wednesday, March 21. The Strouds, their children and their families joined them for dinner at the Country Squire restaurant to cele brate the anniversary. Methodist Women Plan t Barbecue The Sarecta United Methodist Church is sponsoring a barbecued pork and chicken supper to be held March 31st beginning at 4 p.m. Plates will be $3 for pork or chicken and S3.50 for a combination plate including homemade dessert and the drink is included. Mrs. Geraldine Simpson, chair person of the steering committee, commended the teachers for their 1 '/> years of hard work on the book for the Southern Association Ac creditation Committee. April 9 and 10 are the dates for the visiting teams. New officers were elected for the 1984-85 school year. They are: president - Elaine Howard; vice president - Roger Grady; secretary - Judy Green; and treasurer - Rebecca Smith. The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders presented a musical revue entitled "Feeling Good," directed by Jane Vernon. The meeting was adjourned by Rev. Murphy.
