Volunteers Needed
To Deliver Meals In Kenansville
Duplin has more than 200 volun
teers delivering meals to homebound
elderly persons. Adequate volun
teers participate in the services for
the aged program delivering meals
in each part of Duplin except the
Kenansville area, Mary Dykes,
volunteer coordinator with Duplin
Services for the Aged pointed out.
Presently about 25 volunteers help
transport hot meals to elderly home
bound citizens in the Kenansville.
According to Dykes, the Kenansville
route takes over an hour and needs
to be split. Dividing the route would
fall for morp i/nlnntoprc fn fKa

already needy situation. Volunteers
are being asked for only one hour per
month to be used in delivering meals
to about 10 area Kenansville elderly
residents. Dividing the Kenansville
homebound meals route and
manning the delivery program
properly would call for 50 volunteers
from the local area. Dykes said.
"Without volunteers, the home
bound meals program will have to be
discontinued in the Kenansville
area," Dykes said. "The Services to
the Aged program has enough funds
to provide the homebound with food,
but not enough to pay for their
delivery. And, that makes us and the
individuals homebound totally de
pendent on volunteers to make this
program work."
Kenansville is one of six nutrition
sites for senior citizens in Duplin
County, and the original location for
the first hot meals served to the
elderly by the Services to the Aged
program.
"The program not only provides a
nourishing meal to the homebound
uivsi tinmen), uui aisu assures
these people that we care about them
as individuals," Dykes said. "It also
offers individuals and families the
opportunity to live independently in
their own home rather than in a
hospital or other institution."
Along with the 10 homebound
meals served to Kenansville area
senior citizens, 13 persons in
Wallace and 10 in Rose Hill receive
meals brought from nutrition sites by
Duplin volunteers. Meals from the
Faison. Lvman and Warsaw nutrition.
sites are also delivered to home
bound by volunteers.
Volunteers interested in delivering
homebound meals in the Kenansville
area can phone Mary Dykes at
Duplin Services to the Aged office at
296-1511 to sign up.
