Magnolia Library
The Magnolia Women's Civic Club has rented the
above building with the option to buy with the intention
of beginning a library in the town. The building is
believed to have been built before the turn of the
century. In the early 1900s it housed Jack Mathis'
saloon or bar and since that time, a dime store, a
department store and/or a drug store, a soft drink
bottling company. "Magnolia Bottling Co." and two
churches, just to mention a few. In fact, the last use of
the old building was for a church, the Church of God,
who still owns it. Club treasurer Dene Guy stated a fish
fry to raise money for the project is to take place this
Friday, April 27 at the Magnolia Community Building
at 5 p.m. All the money will go to the project as even
the fish have been donated.
Runner Visits Kenansville Elementary
On March 30. 1984 Mr. Harry
Hobbs from Wilmington, N.C.
visited Mrs. Connie Matthis' Sth and
6th grade P.E. classes.
Mr. Hobbs was the first person to
run up the steepest side of the Grand
Canyon. This was a seven mile
switch-back run which took him two
hours and two minutes to complete,
the run was made during August of
1983.
Mr. Hobbs is thirty-three years
old. He became more concerned
about his physical condition so he
began to run every day. He had
always wanted to do something no
one had ever done before so he made
reservations at the Grand Canyon for
this run. At tbat time his wife was a
teacher at the Center for Handi
capped in Wilmington and he
became more interested in their
needs.
He raised money by collecting
pledges from local people and busi
nesses. He decided to split the
money between the Cystic Fibrosis
Fiundation and the Center for
Handicapped in Wilmington.
He trained for abojt one year by
running each day. As part of his
training, he averaged running about
five miles a day inthe sand dunes at
the beach to increase his leg
muscles. He ordered a special device
to regc.ate the amount of oxygen he
received. The reason for this device
was because the altitude in the
Canyon was much higher than on the
coast.
His run was a success and he
raised approximately $2,000.00.
Our students enjoyed his visit very
much.
