In addition to Craig's selection to attend Governor's School in Win ston-Salem, he has been accepted at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. According to East Duplin High School Guidance Counselor Judy Hunter, the School of Science and Mathematics is ^ residential high school for rising juniors. Students attend during the junior and senior years and the school is designed to provide advanced educational oppor tunities for the academically gifted, Hunter pointed out. Craig is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Sybrant of Beulaville and is an Eagle Scout. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the ROTC program at East Duplin. As well as participating in academic clubs, Craig has been a member of the football team and the track team. Melanle Parker Mclanie Parker is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Parker of Calypso. She has been selected to Craig Sybrant attend Governor's School bast in Laurinburg. Melanie is a junior at North Duplin. Governor's School of North Carolina is a six-week summer program for gifted and talented high school students in the 10th and 11th grades. Students are selected ac cording to the criteria for the academically gifted program as established by the North Carolina State Board of Education. Melanie has served as a marshal and was a member of the North Duplin quiz bowl team. She is treasurer of the Beta Club and was selected to the East Carolina Scholar's Weekend. Melanie works with the Rebel annual staff and participates in school sports on the tennis and basketball teams. She has also appeared in a spring musical at North Duplin. Local Students Recognized At MOC Honors Banquet Beverly Bryant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Bryant Sr. of Rose Hill; Kay McNeil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy McNeil of Faison; Debbie Outlaw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Outlaw of Mount Olive; and Kim Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jones of Warsaw, have been honored at Mount Olive College. Other local students who parti cipated in the program are C. Keith Carter of Warsaw, John Lewis of Faison, Joy Sullivan of Faison, Frankie Whaley of Kenansville and Tammy Marshburn of Beulaville. The Honors Program at MOC is designed to provide special recog nition and enhance the learning experience of outstanding scholastic achievers. In addition to their regular academic program, recipients of Honors Scholarships participate in the enrichment program which enables them to pursue an individual interest area. Mount Olive College is located in Wayne County and is currently advancing to a four-year program. The first baccalaureate class will enroll this fall. Engel Appears As Charies Dickens May 16 The Friends of the Duplin County Dorothy Wightman Library invite you to spend an evening with Charles Dickens on Thursday, May 16 in the Hoffler Auditorium of James Sprunt Technical College. Dr. Elliot Engel, associate pro fessor of English at N.C. State University, portrays the 19th Century English novelist in an entertaining one-man show. In the program. Dr. Engel relates Dickens' fascinating life and career during the Victorian era of England, then becomes Dickens, presenting selec tions from the author's works such as Oliver Twist, The Pickwick Papers, and A Tale of Two Cities. Dr. Engel's enthusiasm and lively reading will delight newcomers to Dickens and exceed the expectations of confirmed Dickens lovers. The audience will come to know the acclaimed English novelist as he was in his own lifetime. A graduate of Indiana University and UCLA, Elliott Engel is the founder of the Dickens Disciples, a literary and social club in Raleigh which meets monthly to study the novels of Charles Dickens. The club is the largest of 60 such societies throughout the world. Tickets for the 8 p.m. performance are $2 for adults and $.50 for students.
