Electricity Is Safe When 'Properly In- stalled, But is Very Unsafe and Dangerous if Not. Electricity is at once the safest and the most unsafe method of illumina- tion safest when wires, fuses, witches and lights are installed in standard manner; most unsafe when they are not installed in a standard manner.' Temporary extensions of wiring in show-window displays and In the many ways that are usual be fore Christmas should be looked after with the .same care that is taken with the permanent work. And not a thing should be done in this respect with out the approval of the local author! ties. The current should not be switched Into new work until it .has been approved by an authorized in spector. Because an electric light Is not an open flame it should not be presumed that inflammable sub stances .which may be in contact with it will not be ignited. " ( BAD -FLUES DANGEROUS At Least Twenty-Six Per Cent of Fires Are Caused From, Defective Chimneys. Statistics show that at least 26 per cent of the fires in this State are caused by defective chimneys and flues. Of course all of these fires could have been prevented and should have been prevented, If the parties build ing the chimneys and flues had fol lowed our building laws governing these matters, especially in regard to lining these chimneys and fluei with fire clay linine. There is no nueatlnn fin my mind as to the adviaabilitv of lining chimneys and - flues with fire clay lining . In our State we are requiring this now in our state building law, and practically all of the trouble is com ing from chimneys and flues built prior to the enactment of tliis law or where it is not fully enforced. James R. Young, Insurance . Commls, sxoner. The accompanying letter has been addressed to mayors, fire chiefs and fire marshals of Texas by State Fire Marshal Inglish: Examine . Your Flues Reports to the State Are marshal from December 10, 1910, to Septem ber 10, 1915, show that 3,766 -fires, or 15 per cent of the total number that occured in dwellings, private board lng houses and other like occupan cies, were due .to unsafe flues. As suming that the same proportion of flres reported, "cause unknown" is due to unsafe flues, the total number is '4,580, or 20 per cent of all such : fires. Unsafe flues cause a larger num ber of fires than any other one thing to which fires are attributable. The saddest thing about this fact is that all such fires are preventable. They occur by reason of carelessness and indifference that amounts almost to criminal negligence. The season when fire must be had for. warmth and com fort is almost here. Have you exam ined your flues? The rules of ordin ary prudence and business sagacity require that everyone make a care ful examination of all flues in his property at the beginning of each season, before' fire is permitted in them. This precaution is absolutely imperative at the beginning of this season, and more especially so in the Gulf Coast country and that portion of the state passed over by the re- ' cent hurricane. The high winds of that storm left in their wake a ver itable chaos ofninsafe flues, which, if not put in order will cause the fire demon, with hellish glee, to 'follow the storm and take a fiendish ielight in completely destroying wha the wind only damaged. Again we ask: Have you examined your flues nd put them In good order? If you ' ire not do it now. If you do not and lr occurs by reason of your negligence, destroying vaable property of your own and perhaps that of your neigh bor's as well, your conscience will rightfully accuse you as responsible -for a fire that you could have prevent ed by heeding this warning to exam ine your flues. WORKMEN'S COMPENSA TION LAWS. In New York, New Jersey, Massa chusetts, Connecticut, Michigan, Illi nois, and Wisconsin the labor em ployed far outnumbers that of all other States combined,-and in each of these States a Workmen's Compen sation Law has been enacted. EXAMINE YOUR POLICY The fire insurance business- or at least the method of arriving at the final result, rate, is probably less understood and appreciated by the average citizen than any other busi ness with which' he comes in contact, for the reason that, until his los. occurs, he feels that he is paying for something which he does not receive. The man who excercises the greatest caution in the acceptance of any other ecnrlty mortgage deed or evidence of debt will accept 3 insurance con tracts without any Investigation or cecurttr either as to the worth of the company or form of contract.
