The most of us had. before MonHav
night, an exceedinelv hazv idea of
what the "Camp Fire Girls" stood for
whether it was simply some pretty
girls in Indian costumes posed before
a nre, or whether there was reaally
something to it. We have no doubt
since our former townswoman. Mrs
Wilcox brought her own. and hr
neighbors' girls along with her to
give an entertainment for the benefit
of the Red Cross.
That the organization stands for
patriotism, good health and useful
work, no one now doubts.
The fire was there, and the tent.
and the pretty, erirls. but there was
besides useful training, high ideals
with recitations, singing and march
ing. Mr. Arthur Carver's beautiful
voice was heard again by his Tryon
iriends One of the most devoted of
these was heard to criticise the pro
gram as being all too serious; he
wished that they might have gone
'Rolling Down to Rio", or doing some
jumi icsuve unng, dui most oi us
.vere quite satisfied with what we had
and disposed to listen to the lively
meioaies ottered by the Tryon Or
chestra with the greater satisfaction
because of the contrast, wishing only
that the members of that company
would train the rest of us to sing the
National Anthem in a more fitting
;nanner and that some generous per
son, having a good piano to store.,
would put it in the school house. By-the-wajy
that building never looked
so clean and neat since the day it was
first occupied,, owing to the hard
work of Mr. Geo. A. Gash.
Altogether Tryon scores one more
very successful entertainment.

LETTER LIST.
Local opinion differs as regards
the decision of the U. S. Supreme
Court adverse to the federal law
which forbids the outshipping of the
products of factories in those
states whose lows do not come up to
the more rigid child labor laws of
other states. Child labor, five of the
nine judges say, is solely an affair of
each state, with which the national
government cannot constitutionally
interfere. It concerns the welfare
not of the nation but of the state
alone. No", say the four other
judges, it concerns the welfare of
hundreds of thousands, perhaps mil
lions, of future citizens of the whole
U. S therefore it is of national inter
est and ought not to be shielded or
perpetuated by the plea of States
rights.
Those Tryon citizens who have ex
pressed themselves on the subject arc
not divided by partisan or sctional
prejudices. Some Northern Republi
cans tolerate, if they do not wholly
approve of it. Some Southern Dmo-
frats condemn it. lhose who favor
it say that child labor in this region
is a benefit. It brings mountain fam
ilies into contact with schools and
churches and enables them to earn
and learn much more than they could
do in their remote regions cut off al
most entirely from their fellow hu
mans.
Others are more deeply impressed
with the evils the system brings upon
hildren too young for such severe la
bor, confinement and long hours. A
native North Carolinian testifies that
he has seen right m this neighbor
hood, a big lazy, hulking father get
his ten year old sleeping child out of
bed at an early hour, give it a cold
potato and slice of bread and send it
out crying to the long day in the mill
to help support him in idleness.

reh.
A prominent native clergyman whe
knows his North Carolina better than
most men. can depict scenes ana in
cidents of misery and cruelty that
are inflicted upon children by greedy
inhuman parents and avaricious cor
porations, which convince all his
hearers that the system should be
dlv recrulated than it now is
in snmp of the states.
However one of the niine judges
was of a different opinion, and the
law now is that whatever the fate of
thp rhildren under these abuses, the
right of each state to end or proloner
. . j 1 Tl ill
them cannot be quesuonea. it win
be the law until all the states reform
thp svstem or some future members
nr mom her of the Supreme Court
agree with the four dissenters.
