some people say that it has helped to
put Tryon on the map. Mr. Hus
mann, Viticulturist from the U S.
Department of Agriculture says that
nowhere in America has he eVer tast
ed such Niagara grapes and that
from him is indeed praise as he is one
of the greatest grape men in- Ameri
ca today. Tryon has made its repu
tation on the Niagara although the
Delaware, which is considered- the
standard of excellence in America
grapes, stands right b'y its side in the
markets. Our Niagara grapes com
mand much higher prices than the Ni
agara grapes further north, as our
soil, elevation and climatic condi
,tiions suit the Niagara, which does
not thrive on every hill or mountain
side even in the Tryon section.
Not only do our Niagara grapes
come to perfection Tiere but in some
way nature seems to put a dash of
sunshine into them.
In the summer time many people
come to Tryon for the grapes, a lady
from Denver several years ago spend
ing the whole season here in order to
eat. the grapes, her " physician having
recommended her to take the grape
cure at Tryon.

Our market is almost unlimited pro
vided we can get the grapes- to the
customer in good shape, but at the
present time the local express facili
ties are overtaxed to handle the
grapes and it is only by shipping in
solid cars and redistributing at dis
tant points such as New York, that
we can extend our business. With
In 1917 we made one large ship
ment to New York, but on account of
the many cantonments in the South
the demand for fruit was such that it
was not necessary to snip an yy more
north of Washington, but from pres
ent prospects it will be necessary to
put cars this season direct to N. Y.,
and there redistribute the same to
smaller places. This is the only way
to get into the east with the grapes
in good condition, as the express
company damages the grapes too
much by rough handling at junction
points. In order to ship in quantity
it is necesary to combine the product
of a section just as is done in Califor
nia. The Tryon Fruit Exchange, Inc.
employs a manager who keeps in
touch with all the markets by wire
and plays the game of putting the
grapes on the bare spots on the map,
because a glutted market generally
means disaster to the grower. Under
the rules of the Exchange, after de
ducting the actual expenses, the total
proceeds of the grapes sold during
each week, is divided pro rata among
the growers according to the number
of crates shipped by each, which is
the modern way of handling in the
great fruit sections of the West.
Although the Niagara and Dela
ware are the great, crop grapes for
Tryon, there are many other varieties
grown in this section. The Flora of
the North and South meet here and
not only can-you find at least four
great families of wild grapes in the
woods but in the vineyards not only
are many varieties of Northern and
Southern grapes grown but the
Rogers Hybrids and the Munson Hy-
bave been sent to Washington in one
shipment, to show the possibilities of
this section, Mr. Husmann .wished
more European grapes planteu out at
the prices we receive for the Niagara
and the-Delaware the thing to do is
to plant more of these two varieties
and nut all that we can snare from
our very best trade right into New
York City, and when Tryon grapes
are as well known by every man wo
man and child in that great center of
humanity as they are now known m
Columbia or, Charleston, then,' the
game of placing Tryon's grape crop
will be an easy one.
Do we wish more growers? Yes,
the more the better, provided they
raise first-clas grapes and come up to
our standard pack. Good fruit when
known sells itself, but poor fruit is a
drug on any market.
The growers or the . officers of the
Tryon Fruit Exchange would take
pleasure at any time in advising new
men as to planting and running a
vineyard. Profit by the mistakes of
others. We are only too glad to aid
new comers any way we can. Meth
od of planting, trellising, cultivating,
spraying and pruning, are all impor
tant but most important of all is for
a new comer to be sure to get a prop
er location or site for a vineyard, as
there is all the world of difference in
the flavor and quality of the grapes
and success or failure may depend on
this first point. When in doubt, ask
questions. Only fools know it all-
wise men are ready to ask questions.
