COLUMBUS Mr. C. C. Owens moved the first of the week ito his handsome new, rresidence which has just been com. pleted on Peak Street. ..Members of the Senior class of Stearns High School have started something In their school this year which Is costomary n many colleges and probably in other High Schools ? namely, the custom of planting or| setting out - a class tree. They choose for their tree the stately Norway maple and placed near the stone steps at the front entrance to . the school grounds. Here it Is hoped the tree mav ever stand and grow and be a living monument to the worthy class of 1925, and that future classes of S, H. S. will contin ue this costom which will help so much in beautifying the school grounds and then iu future years how they wi.l cherish their class tree! , ..Mr. Robert F. Moody, well known insurance agent of AshevUle was la town on business Wednesday. / i / Another new home recently com pleted in Columbus is that of Mr. Boan Constance. Mr. Constance moved last week, altho' mention of the fact was not made in the "fruit ' basket turn over" write up which appeared in last week's NEWS. Mr Constance has had his ol(J house | which was located on the same lot as the new one, torn down. Due to the steady downpour of rain last Friday which prevented the school busses from bringing pa rents in from the country, the Co lumbus Parent-Teacher Association did not meet. Date of next meeting will be announced later. Mr. W. M. Blanton, of Shelby was a business visitor in Columbus Wed. nesday. A. Stroup is attending the State Baptist Convention at Raleigh this week. Fire broke out in the new Polk County Gin Thursday about two o'clock, but was soon put out by in. terested ones who rushed to the sce^e of excitement. It is ? not j known how it started unless a match had accidentally been dropped in the cotton which was being ginned.. The loss which was ewered by insurance was around one hundred and flfty dollars. New parts of machinery / were ordered from Charlotte and the next day, ginning was resumed. Misses Leggette, Rinehart, Chand ler and Elizabeth McMurry, of the Stearns High School faculty spent last week end in Spartanburg.
