Weekly Panorama of Events in the National fapital. By PETER KEEGAN Special Correspondent The Polk County News CONGRESS IS BACK at jflrork after six months lay off, its principal job for the next thrae months being the approval of the Federal Budget for the next fiscal year beginning July lt 1925. The Budget as submit, ted by President Coolidge ? provides for expenditures of $3,641^000^00 apd it Is planned by the Administra tion to curb Government expenses to such an extent that a surplus of nearly $375,000,000 will be realized during the year. THE GOVERNMENT HAS com. plied completely with the term of the Washington Naval Treaty now that the hull of the battleship Wash, iqgton is resting at the bottom of the Atlantic off Cape Charles, Virgin, ia. There was considerable . mys tery about the bombing and sinking of the vessel. While the battleship Texas was putting holes in the Armour of the Washington and Air. planes were bombarding the hull# official denial was made at the Navy Department that any shots had been fired at the doomed warship when news finally came through^, however, that the Washington had been d/e stroyed Secretary Wilbur had a dif ficult time explaining this denial. LITTLE INTEREST IS BEING manifested in the Capital in tlie trial at Chicago of Col. Charles R. Forbes^ former Director of the Unit ed States Veterans Bureau, who is accused of conspiring to defraud the government. When a Senate com mittee was investigating the Veter ans Bureau Forbes peccadillos were the talk of the town but the capital forgets easily and is looking for new thrills^ being willing to leave Forbes to the more or less tender mercies of the Chicag0 Corurt. Paragraph two of the Senate Investigating Commit tees which ?ept the country in an uproar last winter are preparing to go at it again. The so-called "Daugherty Committee" will meet chiefly td prepare its report on the investigation of the c Department of Justice but it will resume its inquiry if Senator Wheelei- has his way. He is supposed by the Chairman of the Committee Senator Brookhart, of Iowa who has been thrown out of the Republican party by the "Old Guard'* and is now a "man without a party J' Senator Walsh of Mon tana, the Oil investigator, has an nounced that inquiry into govern ment oil leases will be resumed. SECRETARY HOOVER is being suggested for appointment as Sec tary of State in the event that Hughes should decide to resign next spring.- Hoover would like to get out of the Commerce Department as h? feels that it has few opportunities When he consented to become Sec retary of Commetcce in the Harding Cabinet he had planned to have the shipping board and the government merchant marine under his jurisdic. tion to0 but the plan never material, ized. PRESIDENT COOUDGE is Wash ington's champion Jay-walker, De spite all safety first campaigns, the President narrowly escapes be ing hit every time he goes out walk ing and that is every day. , At each street intersection, he keeps right on going never looking to the left or right, and the quick work of the ser crets service men who always ac. . company him has beei^ the means of saving him from possible injury, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS are hopeful of getting some money from France and Italy during the winter in payment of their big war <|ebts.'" France owes four million and Italy half as much. The French are now supposed to set $350,000,000 a year from Germany under the Dawes plan and Secretary Mellon would like to see some of this money keep on mov ing across the ^tlantic to help ont in > ? his tax reduction campaign^ The debt question has been discussed with Mellon by Jules Jusserand the retiring French Ambassador but he promises nothing definite. ?? 0 ] DURING THE WAR. "says the' American Legion Weekly," a young woman received a letter fvom her 1 sweetie overseas. As sh ?, read it she broke into ttears. "T-.-tom's getting terribly bloodthirsty and mercenary" she sobbed. "He sayfl that he shot six naturals in an hour, and that he cleaned tap 6,000 francs in the slaughter." . * Read the BEST Weekly paper in North Carolina, The News. . y .
